TTA VIN's

For anybody that wants it, here's what I've collected over the years. I can't take credit for all of it. I wish I could remember the name of the person that started this list. Its just been so long since it was started that my memory is gone, along with all the emails from that computer. Anyway, here it is. I would love to see it grow and become complete.

Some VIN's are missing the complete 17 numbers because the "check digit" wasn't figured out. I never did the math to do it.

Thanks,
Rob

Sweet! Hope everybody can add to the list.

It would be great if this list gets finished and all TTA's are accounted for. Maybe Chris can make an updateable database where users can put their VIN in and spit out a number. Like Russ' old site used to do.

Maybe someone can contact John Pearcy or Russ Selerno to see if they can give the info to finish the list?

Which was is Sam Kinisons car he died after a head on collision? Where's that car? Always wanted to know who got it...

Kinison was working to become clean and sober in the months before his death and he married his girlfriend Malika Souiri in 1992. Just six days after the wedding, Kinison's white Pontiac Firebird Trans Am was struck by a seventeen-year-old who had been drinking on US 95, four miles north of where it intersects Interstate 40 several miles west of Needles, California. He had taken US 95 North instead of taking the well known shortcut to Laughlin, Nevada. Kinison was not wearing his seat belt, and his chest struck the steering wheel upon impact. His best friends J.J. Wall and Carl LaBove were in the van behind him. Kinison got out of his car and fell to the ground, and LaBove picked him up and held him until help came. As they sat on the road, LaBove reports that Kinison was looking down the road and laughed and was talking to somebody and said, "No, not now." Then he laughed and said, "No, not yet," and laughed again. He said, "Ok, ok," then died in the arms of his best friend. Oddly enough, Kinison often joked about drunk driving and the futility of trying to prevent it in his act, firmly stating: "We're going to drink, we're going to drive, we're going to pull it off." His wife survived the accident. The other driver received only minor charges. It was later found out that the other driver was not over the limit and even gave CPR to Kinison after the accident. Kinison was found to have very slight traces of cocaine in his bloodstream. Friends and relatives insisted that the comedian was 100% sober at the time of the collision.

Not sure I've heard that twist on the story before, with the other driving giving CPR. From what was on the E! True Hollywood story the other driver was a younger kid in a pickup on his way to a swap meet. He was speeding and passing cars into oncoming traffic when the accident occured. According to what Kinison's brother said, the kid got out of his truck and said something to the effect of "Look what you did to my f***ing truck." Somewhere I still have that episode on tape (yes VHS) and they did show the mangled TTA.

There's been a rumor floating around for years that somewhere there are photos of celebrities picking out their TTAs from the assembly line. Jay Leno is one name that is commonly thrown around. Since he is a big GM fan and also owns GNs it wouldn't be a stretch that he owns a TTA. Maybe George can confirm this? DontKnow:

I have talked with Jay Leno quite a few times, and he said he never had a Trans Am.
Or a Grand National (I asked him this, as I read a story on him driving a GN against Tim Allen in a Mustang).
I did hear that Tony Curtis was big into Trans Ams, but never met him.

Hmmm, guess someone must have borrowed Jay that Duttweiler twin turbo GN for the burnout contest. It was televised on the Tonight Show, who could do a longer burnout, measured in length. Tim had a Saleen Mustang and ended up winning. :thumbdwn:

On a related note, if any of you follow the show Top Gear from the UK there is talk of a US version being produced. Rumor mill has spit out 2 possible hosts, Jay Leno and Jerry Seinfeld. I think that would make for a great show.

Another related note, I got to meet Duttweiler a few years back. Super guy, really down to earth. Got to visit his shop with another TTA owner. There were turbos laying around as big as your head!

you have bad info according to the PHS docs that came with my car.....#1451...the VIN is off by one sequential digit....

"No soup for you!!"

Take it easy, just messing with you. The fact that I knew it was the "Soup Nazi" should have given it away.
:drunk:

Tony Curtis visited with me in my cockpit a few years ago on his 80th Birthday. He was flying from LA to New York. If I had known he was a big Trans Am fan we would have spent more than 5 minutes talking. Very nice man, loves his fans. We talked about his WWII service as a Navy signalman...aka Bernard Swartz.

I'm going to be looking at VIN 227285 on the list this week. Owner claims it's festival car #75 and it says it (barely legibly) behind the plate. I'd think it was a little higher number than 75 if they numbered them in the order of the list. Any input on that anyone?

The build number will not match the festival number. The build numbers, as most agree, are the sequence in which the cars were built based on the last 6 digits of the VIN. The festival numbers do not seem to have a ryhme or reason, maybe just the order that they arrived at Indy. If it is a cloth/T-top car chances are it was a festival car. Based on the VIN it sounds like an early production car, probably within the first 200.

Thanks Ron! These build numbers/festival numbers/etc seem to be complicated. I just don't want to pay for something that's not what it's represented to be, you know?
It's got a few modifications done too and I'm wondering if they affect the value negatively. The typical injectors/AFPR/Walbro 340, cam/springs and headwork, THDP/3" exh, K&N/MAF pipe are not a huge deal but it has welded in subframe connectors. I guess because they're welded I tend to think they hurt the value. I know they actually strengthen the car but do they hurt the value? I'm not looking at a TTA as an investment I just get bored after a couple of years so I hate to buy something too modified and take a beating on it.
Maybe I worry too much! It looks like a beautiful car.
