Drove under an SUV today...

Guy in front of him slammed on the brakes suddenly, he slammed on his brakes, I slammed on mine. Even with recently doing pads and rotors, I guess it just wasn't quite enough. His rear wheels left the ground as the TTA's nose acted like a wedge, lifting him up and over. He bounced forward and off. Nobody was hurt fortunately. Amazingly his white Honda SUV had zero visible damage. The TTA, however, was not quite so lucky...

Hood and bumper are scuffed and dented, and that's a fist sized hole on the right side of the bumper, probably from his tailpipe. Driver's side fog lamp lens is cracked. I had to use a screwdriver to pry the bumper off the passenger side headlight's lower lip so it could raise and lower... But that seems to be the extent of it. Amazingly the damage seems to be limited to cosmetic stuff. Even the nose emblem looks salvagable, just a bit scuffed. I imagine it will need a hood and bumper, but that should be it.

Silver lining? My front bumper really needed fresh paint.
 
Ouch! sorry to hear and see your damage! That sucks! But like you said it could have been worse and it looks like a fairly inexpensive fix and no one was hurt. Keep us up to date with your progress on the repairs!
 
Sorry to hear this-glad you (or anyone else) werent hurt. Hope you get things straightened around ASAP.
 
Yeah I'm real glad there were no injuries, and that it seems unaffected mechanically. You can kind of see my best friend in the passenger seat, she was visiting from out of town and it was her first time in the TTA. I was hoping to leave her with a positive experience.
 
No kidding. I've never hit anyone before. It's a hell of a thing... Such a bad feeling when you're standing on the brake pedal and everything goes slo-mo, and you come to the realization that you simply will not stop in time, and that you WILL slam into the back of the car in front of you. I feel a bit guilty for this, but the only thought really going through my mind during that brief period was "how much damage is this going to do to my car?" And when I saw the back of his SUV leave the ground I feared the worst. I'm so used to driving alone. My friend is great though, she took it all in stride. I don't think anything can faze that girl.
 
Sorry to hear about this ... not much you can do in that situation unfortunatly, hope you can get it all sorted.

I had the same accident (not wiht the TTA but with a Volvo while living in Sweden) ... coming from a 70 kmh down to 50 kmh the 3rd or 4th car infront of us suddenly decided to turn left and hit the brakes and of course everyone behind him slammed on the brakes as well and we all ran in to eachother and I was the last one ... so my fault I was told by the police and insurance company as I did not keep my distance ... like you all we could do was step on the brakes as quickly as possible and then in slow motion you could see how we would hit eachother and I saw my hood buckle to a V :-( No fun that's for sure but again nothing else you can do in that kind of situation ...
 
Awe man that's so crappy!! I hate it when that happens. I've done the same thing with my old firebird when I was in school. Had to buy new headlight and hood, but nothing mechanical. Sounds like your the same way too.
 
Someone on another car forum brought up a good point. Sure hope the insurance company doesn't total it... They aren't worth very much.
 
if they write it off can you buy it from them?? I know a guy did that here b.c he want the car more than the 1500 bucks they payed him for his car. I am in Canada and the rules are different here. Good luck with this!!

That sucks. Looks like an easy fix for a good body shop. I seen worse turned into better than factory, so no worries.
 
but on the bright side if they do...im on the first plane to texas to scare some adjusters hahaha something about a big italian guy frm ny that scares them
 
man that does suck. i drove my 92 to work one day a few years back and got hit & run'd by a full size 4 x 4 in less then two minutes at the 7-11 too the tune of $3,200..... SOOOO, because of crap just like that, i'll keep mine wrapped up and put away......

Sorry to hear, man bad luck. I'd get an estimate, then decide if you even want to turn it into the ins company. My guess is your looking at $1000 to $1500 depending on parts needed. Good news is none of the parts you need are TTA only.

Need to pick a shop to get this done at, but I've been help up by yet another unfortunate incident. Sunday night, the power steering pulley shattered and has left it undrivable. I need a quick favor from someone, could one of you guys go look under your hood and see which side of the belt rides on the power steering pulley? Need to know if it's the ribbed side or flat side.

If the pully is smooth, the smooth side of the belt. If the pully is ribbed, the ribbed side.
