Best Oil /Filter combo?

I am buying as many red bottles as I can find. IU have quite a few. Should last a while. I wonder what the shelf life is.

I heard the shelf life is 2 weeks, so send me all the ones that you wont be using in the next 2 weeks so that I can safely dispose of them. No need to thank me, I dont mind helping out a fellow TTA owner.

STP blue is for 8 cyl and a little to thick for our cars. I would suggest not using the blue STP. Use the RED only or ZDDPlus or just run Brad Penn oil and don't worry about any additives.

No one ever commented on what the previous owner of my car told me ... use the Manufacturer's original oil fill of Mobil-1 and he suggested adding Z-Max to everything (oil, gas, tranny) ... the website made a great case for the product ... but that's what websites do.

On another post about Vin # one of the original designers of the TTA (who has since passed) was quoted as saying that the cars came with Mobil-1 from the factory.

Very funny. Do you really need any? PM me if you do. I think they were 39.99 a bottle plus shipping.

Then this goes against the written words of the man who created the TTA. You can look it up on the thread that talks about the unique VIN# of the TTA that I posted. It's all on there ...

To my knowledge,
No TTA came from the factory with Mobil 1 oil.

Incorrect, right from Jeff Beitzel himself, "Mobil 1 was the factory fill. Best synthetic, plus great flash resistance in the turbo. First time at GM, and then put into every Vette since, I think."

No kiddin:DontGetIt: I was unaware.

I still would use dino oil after speaking to the expert turbo buick engine builders by today's standards.

How do we make a sticky? I posted 6 Q&A with Jeff from a 2006 post on turbo buicks. It puts to rest some miss information and is good for new owners. Not to mention it may have been the last time any of us herd from him before he passed. The repost is in General chat- vin # TTA spesific. Maby put it up in History or FAQ?

There is no literature from Pontiac about using Mobil 1 motor oil at all.
No one from Pontiac told me to only use Mobil 1 oil either.
I do know that new cars later used it, and it even says so on the oil caps.
I still do not believe it was used in our cars.

Just took a peek in over the weekend I seem to have no issues with my filter not fitting or hitting, I belive im using the Mobile one oil filter M1-302 or whatever the book at the auto parts place said for the 89 3.8 Turbo engine, it works

To each his own! I do remember my dad complaining when he would take the TTA in to Piehler Pontiac for oil changes, because it would always be more $$$ than the Bonneville or GMC. The service manager stated it was because the TTA used a synthetic oil, Mobil 1 was the one of few synthetics at the time, so that's my experience. I also think we put to much emphasis on this oil thing. 1077 has had Mobil 1 in it for 19 years and 58,000+ miles, with NO cam issues! I got freaked out last year with all this oil talk and started using Red line and additives. I asked my mechanic who has worked with GN's since 1983 and said any oil that is SAE certified and the proper weight and viscosity is fine. Just change it frequently and your car will live long and prosper (his quote not mine:))

i'm thinking napa-gold 1086, valvoline-vr1 20-50w oil, then some red-bottle stp :read:

I use the 1086 napa or get the wix 51086 wix, same filter only cheaper.

They told me to use vr1 30 wgt and a bottle of zddp, even though the oil has zddp in it.

Don't know about the red stuff.

go back through the thread and read what jim said about zddp, STP is the same, half the price

That seems overkill to add more ZDDP. The Vr1 is pretty expensive. If you are going to add the ZDDP, why not just get a quality motor oil and add it to that?

Rob - I used the red STP, but it seems to be getting harder to find. Most places around here only have the blue bottle.
