What are your build dates?

Hey guys,

I was looking at the build decal on the inside of my drivers side door the other day and noticed there are two dates. My car has a build number of #90. It shows the car was manufactured by PAS and had a date of 1/89 with a line below it that starts with 12/88 and has all of the gross vehicular weights following it.

My guess is the 12/88 date was when Pontiac assembled the car and 1/89 was the completion date.

What kind of dates do you guys have and what is your build number?

Dave

Just wondering,

mine says PAS 2/89. then below it is GM, 3/89???
it's #795.
does this mean it went back to GM after PAS was done with it?

Hey guys,
I checked with Rich Van't Hof ("biggdoggtta") he has one of the Pilot cars. Here is an excerpt from his email:

>>You date numbers are a
little unusual but I believe that your reasoning is correct. For your info
the Pilot Cars were 10/88 on GM as Manufacturer stickers. The sticker you
are referring to is the PAS as Manufacturer sticker and you will notice that
it does not have the GM emblem in the left corner like the tire pressure
sticker. On any other firebird except the TTA the sticker you are referring
to will have the GM emblem in the upper left hand corner and of course show
GM as the Manufacturer in the first line verbiage.<<

Dave and everybody,
The cars were built in groups. My car is number 231, and both my dates show 2/89. I do know that there was a hold on them because of the state Of California putting a stop to selling them in California. They said they wouldn't sell them in California. Thanks to all those car mags!! Too fast!!! California has some strick anti-racing laws! The cars were to be released March 14th or 15th, I don't remember for sure (I'll have to check). I showed up at my dealer, waited about 4 hours, and then found out that the factory called my dealer and told them the bad news. Anyway, two weeks later (April 1st, 1989), I got a call that my car was there! I was told that I recieved the first one that was released to the public (for new ownership). I thought it was a April Fool's joke!! I really did, when I got there and saw window sticker for alittle over $31,000!!!! Up to Feb. '89, I was still under the impression about $24,000!!! Big suprise!! I was told that Pontiac had to pay California, to certify them for sale in that state. Who knows? The big bummer was that I called to "see" my car being built on the 27th of Feb, '89, only to be told it was already built on the 24th!! Oh well!
Anyway, through PAS and Pontiac, I know that my car is SAT127/2. This is the order that was placed by dealers to Pontiac. I don't know quite how the cars were sent to the dealers after the race. By this, I'm talking about the cars (the ones from Indy) that showed up months later for much less ($28,000). I was told that these cars were not ordered by the dealers. At the time, everyone wanted new, not used 20th's TTA's. Also at the time, everybody was buying/ordering the cars with every option. Remember, there were only two options. T-Tops and Leather. Everything else was looked down upon. Of coarse, after the figures came out, guess which ones were highly sought after! Not the fully optioned ones! Oh well, live and learn!
The SAT number should be at the top of the left side of the factory invoice that Pontiac used to send outto verify the car. I don't know if PHS sends this out anymore! Mine shows it came with a 305 V-8 MPFI engine!! I got one copy from Pontiac, and one from my dealer when I bought it new! I've even got a fax (looks like it came off an old teletype machine) that warns of cars coming to the dealers with missing emblems!!
Also, getting back to SAT's, they were ordered in order (meaning first order was SAT 1, second order was SAT 2), but the 20th TTA car order was not!
I know the following:

SAT 126 is TTA #1349 (April 26, '89 build)
SAT 127 is TTA #231 (mine)(Feb 24, '89 build)
SAT 128 is TTA #1381 (May 1, '89 build)
My friend at the time (still is), after getting a ride in my car, bought one new at his dealership! His was SAT 126!!! I was able to get him information on his car!!
Did you all know that almost everything on our cars is out of sequence?
They had a Drivetrain sequence, engine sequence, Transmission sequence, and car sequence.
I dealt with Scott Kelly (worked at PAS) back in 1989 (I almost bought his Hardtop car off him-but it was already fully chromed out in the engine bay. That's when I found out how rare the hardtop's were-doh!!!!), and got all my sequence numbers from him! He's a great guy!!! Ever wonder why the number on the top of the intercooler is not your car sequence number?
I wish I still had contact with some of the PAS guys!! I probally could have gotten everybodies!!!!

Hope this answers some questions,

George

Wow, looking back on the dates for this thread...it's OLD! :wheelchair: 2001!

Anyway, my old car, #0130 was built at Pontiac in 12/88 and finished up at PAS in 1/89. As the cars rolled off the Pontiac assembly line they were considered "incomplete vehicles" which is where the 5 in the VIN comes from. It wasn't until PAS then received the cars that they were considered "complete." BTW, after PAS finished with the cars they were actually shipped back to Van Nuys before being shipped to their final destination.
