What are you paying for gas?

Agreed...and for the profit margin on a gal. of gas made on the point of sale. Jim is largely correct.

Profit gouging at the filling station only happens on the "float". That is the gas in the ground that may have been purchased for a nickel less on one day at 3 P.M. and then the price is raised 6,hours later based on area competition and general market commodities pricing. So the next load coming in comes in at 5 cents more per gallon. BUT! there is an unused balance in storage that is being sold based on what has been purchased/ordered most recently, yet it was purchased at a nickel less. See?

So that's about as greedy as the filling station can get. But you don't sell candy bars and soda pop to people who have no reason to come to your filling station. That's the whole idea behind the "loss leader" principle in retail. You loose/break even on some stuff and win on the other stuff.

I really don't believe( after talking to as many people as possible that are in the know) that this is political,right or left. Or that it is an Arab thing either, I feel, based on what little I have researched that this is a rather large group of worldwide stock traders buying and then selling short...alot!

And as someone mentioned, the Asian world is expanding and competing for what used to be our claim as the largest user of petroleum. And, if they are willing to pay more to get more? well then?

This is also a very touchy subject as it will always degrade, especially in a forum such as the internet.

It would be nice to see it gone...to me anyway.

The water problem in the west is not about growing corn.
It's about all the people living out here, from people just plain moving out here from the east, to all the illegals coming over the boarder.
All the water from the Colorado River is mostly being taken away to feed the people in the big cities.
Las Vegas has a water shortage, yet they build more Casinos/Hotels/Houses than pretty much anywhere else.
They signed a water contract with Phoenix, to get even more water.
Believe it or not, Los Angeles and surrounding cities grabs water from here as well.
Talk to any farmer, his suppy of water is slowly being taken away from him. And the prices are climbing for him as well.
Heck, even in this little town/area, with house sales dropping, they are building 3,000-6,000 new homes every year!
And they don't have the water supply to feed them all.
But, cities make money on selling permits to build them.
Then, cut the taxes for big business to come in.
Everyone running for mayor in this town are all contractors/developers.
Think the home building will slow down next year? Or, the year after?
Think again.
Now, on Bush.
You really think Bush is behind the gas prices?
He owns Exxon/Shell/BP and others?
They are making record profits.
And paying your senators/congressmen to look the other way.
OPEC sets the price per barrel, not Bush.
Bankers/Lenders got people into houses they couldn't afford, not Bush.
I know people who bought houses worth hundreds (like almost a millon dollars), with just $100,000.00 down, with jobs that couldn't afford the payments, if intrest went up.
What happened?
Intrest went up, and people everywhere are losing their homes.
1/2 of your income is what the rule use to be, for house payment, not 75-95% of your income.
People forget why we went to war.
Bush is the worst President?
Not as close as you think.
You can't afford things now?
Let's get a demo in, who wants to raise taxes.
Let's see.
You can't afford gas.
You can't afford your house payment.
I know!
Let's pay more taxes.
That'll solve the problem!
This year, I don't see anyone who I feel can get the job done.
Again, it's trying to pick the lesser of the evils.

Jim, I'm uncertain on how growing more corn (or any grain for that matter) can cause a draught. Doesn't draught mean no rainfall?

For the record, the wheat price is high because there was a poor wheat crop yield last year...and not just here in the USA, but worldwide. That is why the price of wheat is high, because there isn't much to be had. There is a huge surplus of corn, and it is in high demand. Why? Because they're turning to corn to make up for the poor wheat crop.

What I gather out of what you've said is that the REAL driver of all those things is the price of OIL.

I especially agree with the part about the banks giving out loans to folks giving "stated" incomes and all the BS that goes along with it just to get them into a house they shouldn't have tried to buy in the first place. I think your "1/2 income rule" is a good one, and I know people haven't been doing that. My housepayment is about 15% of my income. They all (bankers-relators) tried to get me to buy a more expensive house at the time.........imagine that!
 
Holy 5hit!!!! I just called Scottie's Speed shop in Bowling Green Ky. I bought 104 unleaded last fall there for $4.30 a gallon. I just called them and it $7.30!
Now's the time to have your alcy Inj. working, no more race gas for me.
 
$3.34 - 87 Octane and $4.32 for Diesel

Not to thrilled to find out what Sunoco 112 Leaded fuel is going to cost this year. Good thing I rarely drive the TTA. Blows!
 
Made a quick trip to St. Louis to visit with my Grandparents tonight, heading home tomorrow, and gas here is $2.99 for 87. That 16 cent price difference adds up over a time..
 
Something strange is going on here in PA. The price EVERYWHERE is $3.15 for regular. Over the last few months you would see like $3.05 at one place and $3.10 at another and even $3.20 at another. I drove around allot over the last few days and covered just about every inch of Philly and it's $3.15 all over. I even went out of the way tonight to stop at this one station that has always been less and sure enough it was $3.15 there as well. I swear the government plays with those prices somehow. $54.00 to fill up tonight I was just about empty.
 
Only $54? Did you get a one of one chevy with an 18 gallon gas tank?? :cake:

If you were empty it would have cost you almost $75
 
Just to bump this a bit..

Spent $85 dollars on April 26th and then spent $87 this past Saturday..Atleast the truck gets 16-17 in town the way I drive. What a bargain!!!!!!

Lets do some math...630 miles one way to BG...I get 13-14 towing the TTA at 65 in 3rd. Thats about $200 one way. Cost for hobbies I guess..
 
$5.02 per gallon for diesel in naples Florida!
It's killing my busniess-all my trucks are diesel-plus my company is closely tied to new housing construction-a double whammy! I have never seen gas prices go up like this in such a short period. Even during the oil embargo of the 70's I dont think the prices jumped this much. I think we are screwed no matter what! Does anyone here know what is really going on? Any thoughts?
 
Are you surcharging your customers yet? Everyone else is doing it. It's a drastic practice but these are drastic times. Maybe a minimum delivery cost too?
 
ive seen 93 for over $4/gal for the first time lately. theres still places around here where its under 4 but i dont think thats gonna last long. i remember hearing once that an oil company spokesperson, when asked if they could afford to lower prices to give a break to consumers, say that they could afford to do so, but it would not be fair to their shareholders. its all about oil companies making record profits, it seems.

i didnt know gas was gonna cost this much when i got the TTA to drive daily >.>

Two things:

Never believe what you hear...
And only believe half of what you see.:tvhappy:

Besides...I own a bunch of Chevron... and nobody was sympathetic to the shareholders when gas was a dollar to 1.25 a gallon in 1999-2001:D
 
In Calgary Alberta Canada Reg 1.229 a liter = 5.579 (approx)a gallon
94 1.359 a liter = 6.169 (approx) a gallon
diesel 1.259 a liter = 5.715 (approx) a gallon

while we're building our new house the T/A's have been in storage, but we've been living 45 miles out of town and @ thses prices it really hurts, to fill the Cruiser is $65-70 and the diesel Bug is $60 - 65, good thing the Bug gets 50+ MPG, but the Ram doesn't move much these days !! I really MISS the TTA, it hasn't seen the light of day in over a year. It will be like a new car when it comes home !! Guess I won't be putting many miles on the Trans Ams with gas the price it is !!
