TTA Underhood Insulators

I did notice a few at the reunion had a burn or melt mark on them. It does say in the disclaimer that they are not responsible for excessive heat due to chromed or shiney aluminum parts. I will probably take Jans advice and cover the bird and lettering with something when driving. Mine is primarily a show car so I don't drive it "just to drive". I usually stick close to home and the reunion was the farthest I ever drove it. I would have preferred to get a plain one that was just like OEM and black, but didnt like the color choices of the others. I do think the custom one gives the engine bay a complimentary touch. Especially for those of us that dont have any chrome or other custom accessories.

Hey, those came with the car along with a few other goodies! Speaking of expensive those emblems aren't cheap either.
 
Have had the cheap one on from Classic Ind. for over a year now, and it still looks new. It is not molded like the original is, but neither is the one from Carmotorsports.

It serves the purpose and I don't even have any burn places on it above the turbo.

You will find that the heat the turbo generates (so without contact or a chrome heatshield or similar just with the stock setup) the area large as a quarter will start melting ... this happened when I installed the engine with new motor mounts so the turbo is closer (very close) to the hoodliner compared to if you have worn motor mounts ... new mounts raise the engine 1/2" - 1" ...

So the area to cover with a heatblanket of some sort is just were you have the vents on the highest point of your stock turbo shield. Anything else is fine.
 
Got my insulator installed today. I had a week or so to come up with some sort of protection from the turbo heat. I went to Summit Racing and bought a heat blanket with velcro. It is 7" X 23". I was going to just velcro it to the insulator and take it off when I get to shows. But it doesnt work out. You cant really use velcro on the insulator. It changes the nap of the fabric and kinda tears at it. I only did a small area so you cant tell but it would definately be noticable if you took it on and off alot. So scrapped that idea. I ended up using my old coolant heat cover and attached it with small bungy cord. It kinda is shaped the same as the turbo turned sideways. My only question is with the turbo shield vents covered, is that gonna affect performance or mess up anything in the engine by not letting the heat escape?? If so I will just have to take it off and take my chances with the melting issue. I put some pictures up for reference. Thanks for any input.
 
You could buy the DEI heat blanket and lose the shield. "Could" give you a little more clearence. Not quite sure though. They look better than the shield for sure.lol

I had a issue when I installed my 70mm TB/PTE Plenum with 3" up pipe. PTE plenum has a built in spacer. So it raised the up pipe. Insulator was touching the up pipe. Before it started to discolor my nice chrome up pipe, I cut a small hole 3" rectangle in the insulator and put high temp black thermo shield tape. Works, easy, clears. For just over 30 dollars shipped for the insulator, who cares. IMO, don't look bad. I would buy the Classic Industries insulator again for sure.
 
Update on the hood insulator. I ended up taking off the "blanket" I had covering the turbo. Thought I would drive a few times short distances and see. I have went upwards of 20 miles and then when I get where ever open the hood and let things cool down. So far the insulator has no marks or melting-looks good as new. So I am just going naked and not worrying about it. I dont have any mods other than the slightly bigger turbo and injectors, so I think I'm good on the clearance issues. I really didnt think it was good to cover the turbo like that, its got vents on the turbo cover for a reason.

If I look where my melted spot is it's just where the vent lets out hot air; however I had this happen after I changed the engine mounts to brand new ones and the engine sits about an inch higher compared to my old worn (100k miles) mounts ... and it happened when I really pushed the car for a couple of hours so the turbo was defenitly smoking lol

Keep a close eye on it for any signs of heat melted stuff.

Rich sounds interesting, so basicly it's a coating ontop of a OEM hood insulation. With the TTA (GTA) hood insulation long gone what's the plans then will you reproduce them correctly to get coated or will you make them out of some other material that you will coat?

And what would the cost be in the end, just one or two different designs as examples for a price range would be good.

Not a problem to do a white one. Just give me a call asap and I will go over the details. These provide a fantastic look. You may have any logo design you need to include reproducing a picture. Every insulator I sell, comes with a lifetime warranty.

In the case of the C5 and C6 Corvette, yes. In the case of any insulator manufactured in the past 15 years, yes. In the case of the old non-compression molded insulators, such as the 1989 TTA, no. As you have observed, non of the large aftermarket companies have manufactured the mold for an exact replacement UHI. GM has long since destroyed the original mold for the TAA/GTA Hood Insulator. The mold cost is too large for the projected sales numbers. However, if you could come up with 500 buyers at $150 per insulator; I could make it happen. Understand that these insulator would look new at day one and go downhill quickly from there, just like OEM.

My latest alternative is much better, IMHO. Almost no one has an unmodified TTA, therefore no need for an OEM insulator. In my conversations with Scott Kelly, pursuant to his time at the TTA Reunion, he said he does not recall seeing a factory stock example. I have a really nice material to provide the group in a flat design (non-molded).

This offering is not a board material like I inverted for the Custom Embroidered version. This new material can be painted flat black, if desired. I lifetime warranty the custom coated insulators, which are not painted, but rather hand coated with 100% solids. The result is a product resistant to automotive fluids (oil, trans fluid, power steering fluid, brake fluid, coolant, etc.) I have provided hundreds of automotive enthusiasts with of this type of coated insulator, over the past 18 months. I am preparing two (2) TTA insulators, this week; for Georgia TTA owners. You may have any logo design, picture or writing you desire. My car was at the TTA reunion and it had a stock underhood insulator. Ratty looking, but it was stock. I recently replaced it with the insulator from Classic Industries. It's definitely not stock looking (has smooth skin surface, not like some dirty lint out of a clothes dryer like the factory had), but it's very inexpensive ($28?). Now the new clean insulator matches my clean engine bay. Casual onlookers like it.
 
Here's a couple of pictures. I'm glad that you reminded me that I had not taken any yet and I like to document whatever I do on this car. This insulation is somewhat "universal" for 3rd gen Firebirds, so it comes with more partial cutouts/punchouts than needed for a TTA. But you just don't finish removing what you don't need and the cutouts seem to stay in place just fine. When matched up with the original hood insulation, I had to make two new holes that weren't present. I used a utility knife to cut/locate the 2 new holes. It then installed easily. This was a 15 minute, low cost job.

Also note that I used an $8 interior clip removal tool on the plastic retainers for the hood insulation. They all came out without a problem and I was able to re-use every one of them.
 
Exactly, if you do not have a 100% stock TTA.....why installed a stock UHI? Go the cheap version for a close to stock look. Or you can go custom to match the modded condition of your vehicle. Custom appearance and 100% reliability, that is where my product comes into play. Funny how people will spend thousands on small chrome parts for their vehicle, but forget they can spend a few hundred and completely change and enhance 4 x 5 feet under their hood. The biggest bang for the buck in the marketplace.
