Timing Chain

bravesoul1

Car has 101,000 miles on it. Going to Ohio (8 hr trip) car ran beautifully, responsive as it should be. Going home, different story, no response like the day before. could this be timing chain going bad? Could anyone help me with part number, maker, etc., what would be a NOS one, if possible to get? Any and all information would be greatly appreciated.

Also want to replace water pump, same questions as above.
Thanks, greatly appreciated.

With that double roller I take it you need to grind down the boss / rib on the inside of the front cover right? At least I had to do it with my aftermarket cover. So at the top above the cam button and next to the hole where the cam sensor mounts.

Uhmmm, maybe is my answer. Some of the double rollers need that tab ground, but I mainly think it is with the higher end sets or billet gears sets.

Im not sure Thats a timing chain issue ... have you already done the spring cleaning ? could be alot of things bad tank of gas a cloged fuel filter an the list go's on

My projects always seem to snowball ... If it was me an i had to replace the timing chain, I would replace the front cover and oil pump .

When Dennis took the car out he couldn't find anything and said it ran great. Can the timing chain be an off and on thing? with the mileage I heard it was good to replace the timing chain and water pump, guess now the fuel pump. Are the all oem parts snd hard to find ? where ix best place to get them and are there other parts needed to get when you get them? thanks.

still waiting on motor mounts.

Im pretty sure I read somewhere that the fuel pumps were hand tweaked an checked to make sure they were up to task ... get a walbro 340 pump and a hot wire kit .. might as well put some 60# injectors on it as well with a turbo tweak chip it will run alot better than stock an idle like a champ .

That's what Scott told us that they got the really good units and all the others (still good and up to the specs) where used on other cars ... same thing that Intel and AMD do with their CPU's same product manufactured to the same specs just that some will withstand a higher clock rate and will pass that test so sold as a quicker CPU in the end ... pretty clever :-)

I would go wiht a Walbro 340 as well ... check out racetronix.com for a complete kit

At 101k miles you need to change it. It won't give you a warning, it will just fail. (most of the time)

If you're in there do the waterpump. Might as well. I don't know why the infatuation with OEM parts, but just get a good auto parts store replacement and you will be fine. I run new ones from Oreilly's. Can't tell the difference.

Get the walbro 340 as everyone stated.

#1490 is down due to the nylon gears in the timing setup.
When it went, it took out the push-rods and the valves hit the pistons.
Motor is out and just delivered to the machine shop for evaluation.

Looking at JE and Ross pistons.
Ross is just a couple of miles away from my house in LA.

The car has 86K miles on it.

Now in hind sight the first thing that I would do when purchasing a TTA would be to change out the timing set: camshaft gear, crank sprocket and timing chain. No matter the mileage. Just my thoughts.

Hey simo!!!!

have you thought about CP pistons.... that's what I wanna get in my next build. are you gonna get roller rockers?

The cam gear went out on me on tta 733 after I changed the oil, I got really lucky and it must have happened as I shut the car off cause it just never started again. After replacing the timing gears and chain she fired right up.

Both Kevin and I run CP pistons. They aren't that much more per slug than Ross or JE and my machinist all but required me to buy them over my original choice of Ross.

good stuff to know, i plan on rebuilding my motor over the winter(hopefulley i won't get carried away and tear the entire car apart) btw, i was under it yesterday looking for the source of a oil leak and lo and behold i seen it coming from the dip-stick tube where it enters the block, it got my attention because of the red silicone where the two meet. i don't know if it came with a o-ring there but i put one on it, fixed what i thought was a rear main seal leaking

I just use blue silicone there on mine....

I use black rtv stuff for that, matches the color of my block. Rob what all are you doin to the car over the winter?

How much? Please let me know asap. Leather good? can you pm me and let me know price and a picture or two. The lumbar support works? I'd like to have first in line for them.
The TTA tips arrived yesterday in great shape. Thanks and I am going to get ghat polish you recommended. I ordered the timing chain I was given a link to and it arrived also.
Question - I want to have a timing chain cover on it - anyone have part number or place?
Thanks

Lynn - the timing chain cover is also the oil pump housing. If there is nothing wrong with it I would leave it alone and re-use it. It is not a simple task to set up those gears in the oil pump housing properly.

Lynn - I did want to add that if your car has high miles or you have an oil pressure issue, you may want to change out the oil pump gears or swap to a new cover. But keep in mind that you should have a competent mechanic that is familiar with Buick motors do the work. There is a company out there that sells the covers and gears already done. I think it might be TA performance.

Weber sells one as well, but I have no idea what the quality is. Jarred, any comments on that??

Hi,
The car has just over 101,000 miles on it, I have no idea how I would know if I had an oil pressure issue. I have a competant mechanic with buick cars and muscle cars. Are covers and gears alony done for our cars? Would you recommend I do that since I am having the water pump (have to order), the fuel pump replaced (Walbro), the drive belt, waiting for the belt tensioner, I also got a TPS sensor as a precaution. Should I replace the radiator? I am trying to forestall major problems especially ones where you have to go into the engine, motor mounts (One is very bad).

I also still have a question on the cooling fans. I have had the car since 2004 but it sat most of the time being torn apart to be painted and so I could be ripped off (a long story), In the process they cut the vinyl in places, did not match the vinyl parts to gether so there were gaps, supposed to replace the leather on the seats, I wanted entire seats replaced, this guy said only panels needed to rbe replaced for $2,000 plus carpet (which I do not think is the oem color and floor mat). They knew this was a collector car and I wnated stock items (except the paint joB). Jan said none of the fastners/bots etc were the right ones on the fenders. They took the stickers off the door (I didn't know they were important) and did not replacve them (they would have known better). Got spray paint all over the cover for the inside covers of the T tops), left paint on the vinyl. Came back at me for 5 more panels on the doors and charged another $2000 and I found out at the Reunion, they were not replaced, they were painted.

They also charged me $1,200 to redo the chrome on the wheels and repaint them the stock cover. What I got back was shabby work and a powder coat that was not even close to the stock Gold Metallic.
They scratch the leather wheel horribly and there is nothing I can do becuase the owner shot himself in the head and his heirs declared the shop bankrupt so now left with redoing what I spent thousands from an inheritance and frustrated.
AZnyway, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Lynn
