Steering Wheel Recover

Got my wheel back from Greavous and opened it up today. It looks amazing. Very similar if not the same look/feel to the OEM material. I just got back from vacation and am heading out on a business trip tomorrow, so not sure if I will be able to take some pics of the wheel. In either case, I am not sure they will do it justice. Wish I had a mint OEM (or good shape OEM) wheel to take some comparison pics with.

Very nice job, Chris. Thanks again!

Excellent, can't wait to see some photos of it.

Next ... my brake and shift handles then ... Chris hallo :-)

What's the cost for the steering wheel? And will he be doing it for anyone, if so, how do we contact Chris?

I had spoken with Lance about using pics of his wheel before finishing his wheel so Ill post up a teaser. I was hoping he would post up some installed pics for you guys to kick about. Like he said, the pics I took just dont do the wheels finish justice mostly due to the flash washing out the true color of the wheels leather. Ill take the blame for that problem as I have never claimed to be much of a photographer. I also used my cell phone but it has taken some really nice pics in the past. Wheels are just difficult to shoot.

As for my price, Im a bit unsure what I should charge. This wheel was very difficult to do being that there are 6 pieces and all of them somehow attach and are stitched to each other. Honestly, I had no idea the entire wheel was covered with leather when I tossed out a price. I dont wish to get in trouble with this site and doing business. You can contact me via PM or email.

Lances wheel really was in pretty good condition considering the age of the car as well as the low miles on the odometer. This puts the pressure on me to send back something that looked new! It took me 5 tries and pattern revisions before I got it right.

Im glad you are happy with the wheel Lance, thanks for being patient while I got things sorted.

The quality of the work looks good, but in the picture, the leather looks a bit shiny. If you look at Rob's wheel in this thread, the wheels don't have as much shine when they are new. Over time, they get shiny from handling them. Do you have access to leather that has a more matte finish?

yes, ive got leather that has nearly no shine and some with a slight gloss. The leather I removed had a consistent shine everywhere, even in places not handled such as the back side of the wheel at the hub area.

Yeah, wish I could get you all some pics. I am stuck at the CES show in Las Vegas all this week - with the crazy hours that come with it too. The wheel is out of it's packaging, but not on the car. I hope to get the wheel installed in the car and a few photos when I return, but it will be at least early next week.

Thanks again, Chris.

Finally got around to taking some pictures of the wheel with a decent camera. Pardon the car cover as the TTA is still sleeping and hiding from the salty roads in Colorado.

Love the quality of this work, Chris. Thanks again.

Wow - really nice job. I have an early TA wheel I need done. I think I am going to contact him to see if he is interested. I sent him an email.

Very very nice, excellent work I must say!

Chris got the other bits (shifter handle, brake handle and the shifter boot) from me the other day so he's sourcing the material and will get started so we can see what he can offer up for us all with regards to those items as well !

I had my 82 TA wheel recovered by Chris - it's on its way back. I will post some pics when I get it, but the pics he sent me look great. He is definitely an option for getting wheels recovered.

Id like to think I at least do reasonable work however he decided he was disappointed in what I sent him so he got a free wheel wrap out of the deal. Dont look for any rave reviews on this one.

Wow Chris - quick to jump the gun on a post. Don't worry - I am going to give a full review with pics. I did give you the opportunity to make things right, and I guess you felt you did not have the ability to do that.

OK - I just wanted to let you guys know my experiences - you could make your own decisions if you feel you want to use Chris to recover your steering wheel, or shifter boot.
I was one of the first to comment on Chris's job on recovering Gatorlance's steering wheel. When I first saw it, I felt it was too shiny. The detailed pics Lance provided proved that the material in fact had too much shine to it, but the work looked fantastic.
I figured if I provided Chris with a picture of my NOS wheel to go by, he should not have a problem getting the material to match. I was wrong. It came back with way too much shine, and no grain.
This is the wheel after Chris recovered it.

This is the steering wheel I sent to Chris.

It is an original 1982 Trans Am steering wheel. They had a fake leather covering. Before I sent the wheel to Chris, I told him that the foam material was loose in a few spots around the wheel. He told me he would be able to repair it with urethane adhesive. So I sent the wheel off to Chris.
I also emailed him these pics of my NOS wheel so he could match the sheen and texture of the original faux leather covering.

I told him I wanted to match as closely as possible the original texture and sheen of that wheel. I also told him not to make it too shiny, knowing that he made the TTA wheel too shiny.
He sent me this pic when he was done with it. It was hard to tell the details from this pic but I asked him how shiny it was. He told me about the way the original material was.
2012-02-13_11-03-01_76.jpg

I had no idea that after all that he tried to match the shine of the wheel I sent him, even after I told him to match the picture I sent. I am not sure if he has a giant roll of shiny leather he is trying to get rid of, but he does not really try too hard to match the correct leather.
There was a few other issues I had with the work. You can see from this pic that the hand sewn seam goes off at this point and strays towards the front of the wheel.
DSC07150.jpg

When I asked him about it, his reply was that he followed the stitching that was on the wheel. I figured out why the original wheel is now crooked at this point, because it was not when I gave it to him. This is one of the spots where he repaired the wheel with urethane glue. Obviously he set it crooked as it was drying and it is now drifting to the front of the wheel. It is also not smooth anymore, and the underlying material feels lumpy.
There is also the matter of this machine stitch on the bottom of the wheel - which was sewn crooked. Not a big deal, but it is the small touches that make a great job.
DSC07153.jpg

The last thing I am not happy with is this area around the spokes. It does not follow the contour of the wheel and obviously needed an adhesive to bond it to the underlying material. I don't think there should be a gap between the leather and the original material.

I want to finish this by saying I never had intentions of posting about my negative experiences because I felt that when I contacted Chris and told him I was a little disappointed with the wheel, he would have offered to make it right. Instead, he immediately refunded my money, and then sent me an email saying he felt redoing the wheel was not an option. This is not good business in my opinion. I had hoped he would make it right and I could talk about the positive experience I had with Chris. But that was not to be. Not only am I not happy with the wheel, but due to the damage he did to the original foam, I don't think I can have it recovered again.

Vincent-Your recovered wheel has more shine than the OEM one. I dont know of any places that have the grain like the OEM does. My wheel from Dallas Custom is not shiny-he uses a leather with a finish similar to OEM but it is smooth. Heres a picture from his website of an 85 TA wheel.

Maybe you would be better off using your OEM wheel on your car when you get it back from painting. What are you saving it for? This would be the time to show it off, with the new paint and all.

Kymmee - I am thinking of putting it on now. I always hated the fake leather, and thought real leather would look better and less cheesy.
Kymmee - it is funny that you posted that pic. That is one of the pics Chris sent me when he was looking around trying to find examples of the same wheel. I figured when he sent me that, he definitely knew the look I was going for. It would not have bothered me if the grain was off, but he definitely could have gotten the sheen right.
