Pontiac Nationals - Norwalk, OH

TTA850

Well-Known Member
Read in another post that Froste31 (Silvio) is bringing a 30th to show and wondering if anyone else is going, racing, or showing? What are you bringing? I just got to Norwalk this morning, doing a pavement pounders shootout tomorrow then racing Fri, Sat, and Sun with my sunset orange WS6. Never been to this event before but hear the track is awsome so hoping for a good (dry) weekend :)

Pontiac Nationals

I'm planning on going but I'm not sure what days I'll be there yet. I was originally planning on going to the ALMS race at Mid-Ohio on Saturday but I'm starting to think about just going to the Pontiac Nationals all 3 days... If you've never been to the Pontiac Nationals you're going to love it, by far the best show I've ever been to. Norwalk is a really nice track and they keep it clean and prepped.

I know Silvio will be there, Mark (forgot his name on here) is planning on trying to make it, and Joe (Black Sheppards...) was talking about trying to go last weekend.

I'll be there, maybe all 3 days, but Saturday for sure. Undecided about which car, either the TTA or the MSE. Steve I will look you up. It is a great event, well organized and a beautiful place. Summit put a lot of money into the track and facilities over the last few years.

Good luck Steve!

Might be up in NY again soon so maybe we can grab pizza. It's not Chicago style but I'll give it a try.

Cool, its nice to hear good things said about the event and facility. After mentioning it to one of the guys I race with back home all he could talk about was the pound of ice cream for a dollar and how I had to try it lol

I dont know how the race schedule is run but I'm gonna try to take my daughter to see the show field, she loves taking pictures of cool Pontiacs :)

Hopefully George I can go some rounds, payout to the quarters so its not a bad structure. Only thing I dont like is they won't let me double up and run pro and street which is strange cause most events let you buy as many tech cards as you want, Super Chevy at Maple Grove for example I ran bracket 2, dot, and true street. Anyway since my car really fits better in street thats what I'm running Sat and Sun along with nobox gamblers Fri.

Good luck Steve!

Thanks  If we have the time I'd love to take you over to Lombardi's on Spring St, it's not Chicago but imho it's the best of its kind and a little piece of history being the first pizzaria in the US.

Got out there yesterday around 5 and unloaded the car. Saw Silvio and talked with him for a little while and then took a quick run through the swap meet. We're planning on leaving here at about 7 to get there right as the gates open since we have a lot of stuff to do on the car this morning.

Make sure to stop by and say hey Philly, I'll be the young guy in the Power Tour shirt.

I'm going to guess that he took his GTO. The only other TTA there was in the car corral.

Got the chance to meet Kymmee today and talk with her for a while since I guess I missed her at the reunion. It was nice to meet yet another great TTA owner.

Steve, I'm pretty sure I saw your car but you weren't out there. Of course you had to choose the furthest place from the car show to park. I think we walked about 2 miles to get there from our car. I'll have to try to make another trip out there tomorrow at some point and try to catch you.

You guys that didn't come out are really missing out. I ended up winning my entry fee back today at the dinner that they provided (so now I've gotten free breakfast, dinner, and track entry). In the drag racing there's 2 nostalgia funny cars, one of them has the first Pontiac motor to run 90% nitro. It ran a 7.4x on it's first ever full pass down the track and they said it's got deep 6s in it once they get it tuned in. I didn't get the chance to take pics tomorrow, but I'll get a bunch tomorrow.

I got a lot of pictures today and happened to run into a familiar face from the TTA reunion, none other than Bill Owen. He introduced us to another person who had a large part in the TTA creation. I'll post pictures, videos, and stories/comments later tonight.

We just got back a little while ago. It was nice to meet you too, Jared and your dad. It rained a little yesterday afternoon and in the evening. Racing was then done for the night. Saw Steve's car make several runs last evening, I think he had it dialed in pretty good. Hope you won some cash Steve!! It was a great event, The Mecham was well received, A lot of people (including the tech guys)had never seen one before, so we were glad we could share some Pontiac history with all!

Just got back a little while ago, yeah I was pitted just about as far as you could get which sucked cause I didnt get to walk around that much and missed most of the show but it was a great weekend and I did have some really good people pitted near me which made being so far away pretty cool. I actually had a great outing this weekend and dont think i could have asked for more, especially for my first time to the Pontiac Nationals. For anyone on the fence about coming this event should be a must for any Pontiac fan, what a great turnout of cars, excellent facility, and the nicest staff I've ever dealt with.

My weekend started on Thursday with the HPP Pavement Pounders Shootout, which was like a private track rental so I got to play around a little. Went 12.07 and 12.06 then launched a little harder and went 11.99. After lunch I changed plugs from 6's to 7's and put the bottle in the car, first pass with 35N/22F (about 50hp) jets it went 11.59 and then I decided to put bigger 62N/38F (about 150hp) jets in and it went 10.958 at 122.43mph with a spinning 1.55 short and the nitrous controller was cutting the nitrous over 6500rpm (which was at each shift and the last 150ft of track). No bar in the car so I really didnt play too much that day.

Fri - I went into the no box gamblers, threw it away first round with a .119 light to my opponents .002

Sat - even with the bad weather I had a better outing and made it to the 4th round before losing on a double breakout right before the race was called due to rain.

Sun - I couldnt have asked for a better day, the car ran great and my lights were coming around. I went 7 rounds in Street to win the class then 2 rounds in the run off to win Chief of the Pontiacs. After driving back down the track backwards they gave me a huge trophy, dumped a cooler of water on me, and after a bunch of pictures, a quick interview, and signing a girls shirt I picked up $1000 cash and was informed that next year I get free entry, the Chiefs pit spot (right at the staging lanes against the fence), a jacket, and be in a parade. Still hasnt quite sunk in but it was a great way to finish the weekend.

Here are a few pics:

Wow, congrats Steve. They make a pretty big deal about The Chief of the Pontiacs every year. I guess we'll be looking for your face in HPP in a couple of months when they run the coverage of the event.

I ended up winning my entry fee money back at the dinner on Saturday night, and a friend of ours won suite tickets for all day on Sunday which he shared with us. He also ended up getting first in the stock 3rd gen class. It was a great weekend with lots of great friends (old and new).

Here's a link of all the pictures that I took, I'll post a select few with some descriptions since there's 120+ pictures.

Kymmee's MSE, I didn't get the chance to get a picture of the "Git Kit", but I'm sure she could share a couple pictures and info about the car.

A cool CanAm picture from when they did a reunion a couple of years ago at the Pontiac Nationals.

A real 1969 Trans Am 4-speed, I know one of the members on here from overseas is building a replica.

The staging lanes stay completely full all day Saturday and Sunday, I imagine Friday is probably very similar with the time trials.

The drivers name should be familiar for those of you who went to the TTA reunion. Bill stopped over by my car on Sunday to talk a little bit about the TTAs some more and then invited us to come stop by his pits. Once we got there he introduced us to Milt Schornack, the genius who originally came up with the idea to put the LC2 into the GTA body. Milt was a mechanic/partner at Royal Pontiac for a long time and worked closely with the engineers at Pontiac on several of the older race car programs. He decided one day to do the engine swap and created the original black TTA test car. Unfortunately I didn't get to talk to both of them very much since they were in a rush to make it to the staging lanes as they were already running late. If you have some time, do a google search on Milt and read some of the great projects that he's worked on.

Steves (TTA850) car sitting in his pit stall all the way past the sand pit, I think he was about a mile past the staging lanes.

A cool looking 2nd gen drag car.

One of the Econoliners came by for everyone to enjoy. For $1 donation you could climb up inside and sit in the cab of it.

about 1/2 of the drag racing side, it continues for quite a ways down.

I never heard a final tally for the drag cars, but I heard that there was 435 show cars. Normally there's about 600 drag cars to push the event a little over 1000 cars each year. If you've never been, mark it down for next year this is a show that everyone should experience.

i love it, is that one pic a 62 bubble top? (red) :jaw:

I'm not sure which picture you're referring to, but there are a lot of really rare Pontiacs that come. For instance, this Catalina with an aluminum front end and lots of factory high performance parts.

Steve, what a great honor winning "Chief of the Pontiacs". Like Jared said, that is a big deal at Norwalk. I'm glad you had a positive experience there, as I said before, its a great, well organized event, and the staff are just great.

We had a great time also but did not stick around for the awards. Wayne's 3rd gen is a really clean car and he deserves the 1st place win for 3rd gen TA.

Jared, thanks for posting the pictures, I got a few, but more of the racing than the show cars. I also thought the debut of the "Boss Bird" was awesome. They ran a pass Saturday, but Sunday when I was there they shut it down, due to problems with the other nitro funny car in the opposing lane.

Thanks again everyone, and the pics are awesome - looking at other peoples pictures makes you realize just how big this event is and how much you missed with everything going on. I still can't believe how great the staff was, from the guy running the lanes to the guy giving out timeslips and everyone in between they came up to me to shake my hand and say good job. Most places I go people aren't very helpful, here it was like they really appreciate you for coming out to their event and it shows. I've raced at a lot of tracks and this has to be one of the best facilities I've ever been to.

Next year I'll have a much better pit spot so hopefully I get to see more of the action and nobody has to walk a mile to find me.
