What does the stock air box and duct work to the Turbo look like? Any pics or manual diagrams?DontKnow: Is it the grand national air box mounted to our car with different brackets. When I look on the all data website at the service bulletin for our cars it looks almost the same as a grand national one.:detective:

The air boxes are very similar, but they're not the same.

You're also going to need the mounting bracket that goes underneath the air box if you don't already have it. Do you need the plastic tube, "dryer" style black hose, and 90 degree plastic elbow? It's pretty tough to find most of the parts but they're out there.
 
It's only the lid that is different, the opening on the TTA one faces the driver side fender and on the GN toward the front (I think).

The elbow and dryer stule hose is the same on both.

I'll digg out a picture and post.
 
Here you go ... you also see the large flat bracket in the car and loose this is what holds the canister as well as the airbox in place ...

In the chart ignore part 7 and 8 as they are GN only and also the lid in there is the GN lid pictured ... guess GM where to lazy to update the illustration correct for the TTA and just reused the GN page ...

Oh did you know there were a recall on this one ... apparently they could fill up with water easily ... and the fix sent to all dealers where ... you guessed it drill a hole in the bottom of it :-)


So if you buy one and there's a hole drilled then you know why so don't blame previous owner of it lol
 
Are any of these parts stock on a GTA or plain Jane 1989 Trans Am? That bulletin your talking about is where I saw the illustration of the air box. Thanks for the pictures, they will help a lot. Can anyone point me in the right direction for the parts?

What happened to the stock airbox? I'm pretty sure I gave you one, granted it was from a GN. Just turn the lower & upper housing so the intake is pointing out the fender and it's pretty much all the same.

Nope all those parts are TTA and or GN stuff I'm afraid. They do surface once in a while .. post over on tb.com as well.
 
The difference I see is I think is that the bracket that holds the MAF is on the other side of the box. Is that right? Is that the only difference?
The air boxes are very similar, but they're not the same.

Looks like it, I'm not exactly sure to be honest. I just know that there is a difference between the two. If that's the case you could just move the bracket and re-weld it, or just cut it off since you don't really need it anyways.
 
Yeah, I never used to mount the MAF when I put the airbox setup in. Maybe because it wasn't the right one (from a GN) but I just didn't see it going anywhere.

The MAF connects to the hard plastic elbow on the airbox side, and then it's the dryer duct style tubing on the other. So the MAF never feels the shaking of the engine. Heck with my hard pipe setup I just have it running to the drivers side and there's a filter in that area, nothing really hold it up and I've never had a problem in about 10k miles.

Like Jarred said, not going anywhere. When using the open K&N the cone filter was just wedged in the fender opening and the MAF is not going anywhere either. Never had that connection get loose. In fact, didn't have the MAT sensor connected to anything when using the open K&N. From what I was told it was mostly only used for cold temperature start up. But if you disconnect it completely you'll get a Check Engine light.

Should be a simple matter of drilling out the spot welds on the GN MAF bracket move it (we can measure the location on the TTA one for you) then re-weld it through the holes for the spot welds ... clean it all up and powder coat or paint it.

If anyone attempts this could you post a write up with photos of the steps involved for future reference please.

Can you make some kind of template off a letter size paper? I could write it up as a project if it comes out good with a template and directions and could be the alternative for replacement boxes for people wanting to do this.

Sounds like a good idea. It will take me some time to do that as I got my airbox along with loads of other spares in storage ... but yes I can create a template that can be used.
