oil filter removal?

Mark T-TB

Car Crazy from birth
OK... yes I am a newbie to the TTA.
So, I'm doing the 1st oil change. I drained the oil and unscrewed the filter - but how do I get it out? There doesn't seem to be a big enough opening anywhere... (of course the hot oil dripping doesn't help).
Is there something that needs to move??

squish the hose ?? I got it

:teehee: Yep, the first of many adventure's with a TTA ...;)

TTA filter is not too bad to get at, there does seem to be a slightly longer variant though. I put the GM one suggested on this forum on, can't remember the part # right now without going out to look, but the jobber filter I took off was a bit longer and harder to manover out. Worst oil filter I've ever had to get at is in my 02 Saturn SL2, now that's a PITA !

the length isn't the trouble that I had - it was the diameter... no clear path to remove??? Finally tried pushing the top radiator hose and squashing it out of the way... that did work.
I actually had 2 adventures today... the 1st was trying to jack it up. Whoa - these things have a looong low nose.
I did note that the Fram PF5 filter (per Advance Auto) IS longer than the preferred NAPA Gold #1086... but it fit with no issue.
(didn't worry about this filter since the car isn't registered at this point and won't be driven).

Move the radiator hose to the left with one hand.
With your other hand, unscrew the filter, tip the filter back toward you to minimize the oil spill... and pull it out.

Yep that's what I do as well, push the hose to the side and pull it up that way ... I normally put a plastic bag around the filter once loose so that will catch most of the oil .. well most of the time :-) then once off just tip it and pull it up as Joe said already.

I also found using one of those oil mats that sucks up the oil you use on the bench is useful and just push it underneath the filter before you loosen it as this will prevent some of the mess most of the time.

I think that the moving the hose to the left is what ended up working - thanks.

For the oil running out after filter removal [and making a mess] - I use a piece of thin cardboard (like a cereal box) and form a trough to give the oil a path out and away; point it to an "open area" and put the drain pan below the trough. I've been doing that for years, works pretty well on a lot of different vehicles.
