I am hoping someone can help me decode this very weird 1989 turbo trans am serial number 1G5FW2179KL242973 The 3rd diget (5) makes no sense neither does the (79) after the 21 as those should be letters, it has been suggested it may be one of the five prototypes but cannot find any verification... Please help???

All legit and correct … that is car number 833 … one of the 1550 production run

The 5 means incomplete vehicle and the reason is the car was warranted by PAS and GM sent it as a incomplete vehicle to PAS for completion …
And the 5 pilots are accounted for and have a much earlier VIN; they are listed in the complete VIN list you find in the history section
7 is the engine code and the 9 is the check digit
