Local Car Show & TTA

Snowman

Well-Known Member
So I was a little disappointed at a small local car show. I usually do not bother with these events anymore, but wanted to help out my friends who were organizing a show for a local fair.
Most people did not know what the 89 TTA was & it lost it's class to a modifiied GN. Now the GN was a nice car & all, but I could have brought my original low miler GN & had it beat the TTA which is much more rare. Seems kind of ironic that you bring a car to show that people for the most part have never seen one before, TTA's were not sold in Canada, and they vote for a GN which 5700 were produced and are fairly common at any car show or cruise night. DontKnow:
That & I just can't spend an entire day sitting at a car show anymore, cruise nights are much better for sure.

Funny because TTA's are rarer, and I almost gave up and said I'll get a GN, but GN's were more money. Funny how a one year car with only 1,555 made, and GN's in the tens of thousands, still pull in more money.
O well works out better for some one who wants a TTA I guess, just seems odd.

Welcome to the TTA world, they made too many of them to be considered really rare, not enough to known very well.... add the fact that it's a buick motor in a pontiac we kind of get shunned by both sides. the way i look at it it's still a gm motor in a gm car, not like a 32 ford with a 350 chevy... but i feel what your saying about car show's and a TTA

Speaking of being shunned, a few weeks ago I was at a cruise in a few miles south of here. I parked the TTA raised the hood and the hatchback as I always do. There was a GN parked next to me, and alot of people started talking to me and looking at my car. Hardly anyone was looking at the GN, so I heard him mumble something to his friend about a trans am and the next thing he was driving off leaving.

And just yesterday at another cruise in just north of here. I cruised thru where the cruise cars were parked. Buy I parked away from the others at the Lowes parking lot so I could walk over and check the cars out. As soon as I got out of my car, this guy came up to me and told me I should park with the cruise in cars. He said he had never saw a TTA before and wanted to see mine. He had a 1940 chevy there. So I found a space to park and I displayed the TTA.

The same thing happened here at this cruise in. As soon as I started showing my car, several people were looking at it. And the guy next to me in a 08 GTO left, nobody was looking at his car or showing interest.

I really enjoy the cruise ins and have a great time showing the TTA.

That's great to hear Mike, but people leaving because a rare car shows up, thats crazy. When I had my mint 89 GTA, I always lost to TTA's even if they were dirty. When I get 77 were I want her we got to go to a show 2 TTA's will stun!
O last year GTO was 06' lol, and mind if I put only 2nd TTA in N FL in my sig? lol joking bud:teehee:

Especially when I have a really nice original GN sitting in my garage, but chose to take the TTA & got beat by a GN with all the usual mods including wheels & engine chrome. Now, it was a nice car for sure, but when I vote for cars in an original class, the more mods, the less it's worth to me as an orginal car. Most bigger shows have a 3 mods & you can't have it in an original class rule.

Well I need to change 1st in N FL in my sig. I put that in there when I first got the car. Since then I know of 3 others besides ours. A total of 5 or more. One is close to you and he drove it to the reunion last July and comes to some of the shows here in Jax, he was just here a few weeks ago but I missed that show.

There is another one in Nassau County, and it is probably forsale, a friend of mine knows the owner there.

The third one is in Orange Park and it is in a garage and I don't know the condition of it.

More and more keep poping up all the time. When I was in Daytona last month, I met a Daytona man that has one with around 30k miles on it. He said he bought it at one of the Daytona car shows years ago from someone in Orlando that had three for sale at the time.

All of the car owners I have talked about are not even forum members as far as I know.:beach:

While you took a hit with your TTA at a show, hopefully this will cheer you up some. I did a show yesterday with my TTA. 282 cars with 2 GNX's and 4 GN's. I was glad I took the TTA to this show rather then one of my GN's going up against other GN's and 2 GNX's no less all in my class. They had the top 63 cars and I took an award with the TTA. I also over heard several people talking about the car and they actually were getting it correct and knew what it was. Oh and I beat out the GN's as well as one of the GNX's. So while one TTA takes a loss another wins one for the masses! :) The key is don't get discouraged and keep showing the car keeping it out there in the eye of the car show folks and people that come to admire them! I actually had a guy thank me for showing it because he never see's them out anymore. Here is a shot of Frankie (him and his dad were at the TTA reunion and his dad was one of the judges for the reunion) and myself. I know I know he owns a Mustang but it's the only one I'll let park near me! :D

Your right they sure are poping up. Really can't wait and finish my bird, maybe meet up and go to some shows. Like I used to go in the ole days!

Everyone has the misconception a tta is just another turd gen GTA ! The GN is a regal so i dont see the big deal ... I like flying under the radar

Nice win Jim, #396 really caught the eye of a lot of folks at the Reunion. It is a real beauty. Congrats!!!:worthy:

Local small shows can be more of a vote for your buddy deal, it's why I quit doing them so many years ago. That, & I just could not stand out in a field all day with the car at a static event. Shows like Syracuse Nationals are a little different, but they have a year of manufacture cut off, which is another issue of the hobby.
I have always liked & had at least 1 Trans Am in my collection over the years. I know a lot of diehard "57" Chevy types don't like them, but that is their opinion only. I'd like to evolve my collection to be the 94, 25th I own, the 89 TTA, 71 T/A 87 GN & eventually a 69 T/A. I have a 66 GTO Ram Air TriPower Royal Bobcat car that the local Chevy crowd does not really understand either. Don't know how many times I've heard the comment, "389 ? must be the Americam engine, cause my buddy had one of those with a 350 in it" !

It's great to hear a TTA placed so well in a field of GN & GNX's. I find that Trans Ams in general are a very regional deal in interest. Bring a 77 or 78 Black SE out around here & it gets a yawn, take the same car to the U.S & it draws a lot of attention.

Car shows are very unpredictable. I've won a couple trophies by total surprise and shows where I think my car is at the top end I dont win. Participant judged is usually by how many "friends" you have. I dont stress about it, the TTA is a unique car in its own way and sometimes its a good thing to hang in the shadows. We all have a limited production one of a kind car-the ONLY Trans Am with a V-6. Ever.

The worst shows are peer judged. To me that's just someone throwing a show and they are too lazy to get proper judges for the show. I will never attend those. The first time I lost at a peer judged show with my TTA to a vette that had dull paint and rust popping out was the last time. Don't get me wrong I could care less if I win or not but when you loose to a turd it hurts a little! 90% of the time I get home and toss the damn $10 plastic trophy in the trash!

Mike thanks for the kind words! I love ole #396!

I would much prefer a show without trophies done for a charity fund raiser that lasts no more then 4 hours. Unless I set a weekend aside for something like Syracuse or Carlisle I just don't have time for it & since my Wife is not into cars, it's hard to spend too much weekend time doing separate things. I'd rather be out on the bike with her than all day at a static display event. I find the "vote for your buddy" shows insulting & will not take a vehicle to them.
Was out in the TTA to a local cruise last night, finally had the T-Tops out, had a great time, car worked good & enjoyed every minute of it. :burnrubber:

Wanted to mantion that I found the number 41 scribbled under the back license plate area along with a red dot sticker. No idea what the sticker meant. The 41 plate that came with the car has round holes vs the repop ones I've seen on the net that have slotted holes. Next week I'll contact PHS for the package. Have not found a build sheet yet. Is there any way to determine by festival car # what the car might have been used for ?

So looking back at older threads on the forum I found this: EDIT: Found Jan's original post on this...

"Thought I post the info I got many years ago from the gentleman at Indy responsible for the numbering and plating of the pace cars, parade cars and support vehicles for the 1989 event ....

This is what he sent me:

All of this information is from the 1989 Indianapolis 500 Pace Car program file. As all of you already know the Turbo Trans was the "Official Pace Car" that year with GMC being the "Official Truck"

As we do this every year all of the cars that are going to be used during the months from March until May for this event are assigned a number. All cars receive this on the front windshield down low by the VIN number with the trucks and vans to have them applied to both the front and rear glass. The plate that is issued matches this number. The basic guide is that all of the "Official Pace Cars" that are used by the Speedway are numbered 1-80. These are then broken down again and the 500 Festival Committee then gets 34 cars with the remainder to be kept and issued by the Speedway. The Press cars are then numbered 81-100 and the last are usually Administrative units.
Vehicles numbered in the high 200 are normally support units or as they have been issuing Teams vehicles and that is why you see such a high number. We do have the BMV press plates up to 300 to 350 as sometimes the manufactures usually send more in after the first group arrives and is processed.

I hope this explains how the plating process works and here are the numbers from 1989 and there assignment.

Cars plated 1, 2, 3, and then from the numbers 53-78 were used by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and these are what we call Track Cars. Cars numbered 4 through 40 were issued to the 500 Festival Committee (now it is called Indy Festivals) All of the cars from 41-51 were used for the parade and on race day for the drivers parade around the track.
Units numbered 79 through 83 were GMC Safari vans with 84 being a Bonneville SSE.
Cars then numbered 85 through 156 were replicas and some of these had press assignments. The GMC Safari vans then were numbered 157-161 for Pontiac Administrative use. Cars numbered 162-171 were Bonneville SSE models and were for Admin usages with 172-206 being Sunfire Convertibles and these were used for the parade and press and Admin and others during the month of May.

Here is the total recap of the different models that were used:

500 Festival Committee

50 Trans Am replicas

Indianapolis Motor Speedway

3 Actual Trans Am Pace Cars
28 Trans Am Replicas
5 Safari Wagons
10 Bonneville SSE
1 Bonneville LE

Support and Courtesy Vehicles

72 Trans Am Replicas
35 Sunbird Convertibles
10 Bonneville SSE
5 Safari Wagons

Total 219 units

RECAP

3 ACTUAL TRANS AM PACE CARS
150 PACE CARS REPLICAS
35 SUNBIRD CONVERTIBLES
10 SAFARI WAGONS
10 BONNEVILLE SSE
1 BONNEVILLE LE"

Kinda hijacking my own thread, but found this interesting as I'm trying to look into the history of my car, The previous California owner did not return my call, I did not really expect them too, but would have been nice to talk to a previous owner.

You need the actual sign out sheet to determine who drove the car that month ... they are around and one day we might get access to some or possibly all of them but who knows ... I got a copy of the sign out sheet for the license plate I have (original one so round holes ...).

Kind of strange that GM puts one of the badest motors of it's time in a TTA and the car gets shunned by other fbody enthusiasts but they put a piddly Olds 403 in them in the late 70s and they are as great as any other model in the 70s.

Yep , your right thats why i never would have bought my tata if it had a auto, even then the 220hp 400 wasn't anything to write home about but the 403 really sucked, why the auto or manuel brings the money they do to me defies logic, i guess i was spoiled with the 74 sd-455 i had, if that car don't raise your blood press. you need to see a doctor

Who drove the cars ?
I'll have to try the previous owner one more time. I understand the reluctance to want to be bothered about a vehicle that has been sold, some people just do not want to hear about it again for a lot of reasons.
