is my turbo going bad?

i have a pt-61 turbo on my car pushing out ~20lbs of boost. i dont know if its going bad or not though... around 12lbs of boost or so it makes a strange whine, not like a normal turbo spool. it sounds fine at around 20lbs though... any ideas what could be happening?

I had something similar happen a while back, but it could be the turbo bearing starting to rub.

If you can, pull the oil line off and see if it's obstructed or fouled.

That can be a prime contributor to turbo failure.

Also pop off the hose on the intake side and get your fingers in there and see how much shaft play you have. A little in and out is ok but up and down you don't want!

Small correction. If you have in and out play that is the bad play. You can have a little up and down play as long as the fins arnt touching the housing.

10point is right, you don't want any in and out movements and some up and down movement is alright. When you move it up and down try turning the wheel too to make sure it's not draging on the housing.
