didn't see an introduction thread so figured i'd land it here. my son (jack) and I (tom) just bought one of these after several years of looking. he's 14 and after 5yrs of mowing yards blew his entire savings on this with a bit of dad's help. it's got 12,900 miles and plan is to keep it stock (or close)

Congratulations!

If it is all stock, I'd consider a new timing chain set. The sprockets were plastic coated and could be brittle by now. My car's fell to pieces and it is no fun to have it fail so soon after purchase. It is a 30K mile car but had a hard life at the track. An updated tune-up is a must with the correct parts. Time for a scan tool so you guys can talk to your car, so-to-speak.

Nice move. These cars a blast to drive. These are beautiful sounding cars as well. American Turbo!

Scanmaster is the first thing to buy. Put the scanmaster on your dash and monitor knock and many other things. Fuel pump with hotwire kit, 160* stat, Turbo Tweak Chip (for stock injectors) and a TUNE. These are a MUST.

No knock! The car will last a long time and driveability will be great with just the listed above.

Like Joe said these cars are a blast to drive.

I was noticing the wheels are not the correct TTA wheels and the WS6 center caps as well as the lug nut covers are missing. Were the original wheels given to you when you got the car?
 
no, not sure what happened to the originals. I'm guessing they were stolen years ago and these put on. i'll be searching for a set over the winter. like everybody else, I wish they made 17" repos and can't for the life of me figure out why they don't
 
I browsed that thread before I joined. never been a fan of spacers. i'll prolly just find a set of correct shoes and new soles. gonna be hard to leave this alone since I normally modify everything I own it seems :boxed:
 
That's a lot of car for a 14 year old. I hope you read him the riot act about driving responsibly.
I wouldn't trust my son in something with balls and he is 21.
 
Congrats to you and your son on TTA ownership. Also welcome to our forum. You can find the orig 16" crosslace wheels occasionally, but they usually need refinished as the clearcoat deteriorates. I am in the process of restoring some and have made a thread in the Tech section if you are interested in the process.

BTW very nice looking car!
 
I am happy for you guys, thats a great looking car. I am happy your boy worked for it, I paid for my first car and that is how you appreciate what you have. All the above suggestions are a must. Congrats!
 
thanks guys. he mows 14 yards a week and 11 of them are lakefront with a walk behind. like 50-60 feet of elevation change in less than 200'. i'd be ashamed if he didn't abuse it a lil but i'm hoping the occasional trip to the track will satisfy his need for speed bit.
 
this is what his poor ole dad has to drive to work 365 days a year. my ole granpa buick with a chevy engine :wheelchair: to tow his Pontiac with a buick engine ttarider

He worked for it - that should be reason enough for him to take care of it. Kids tend to appreciate the luxuries in life when it came from their hard work. Good luck with her. That was my dream car when I was 17. It took me 20 years, but I still feel like a kid again when I get behind the wheel for a cruise.

congrats to you and your son for a great purchase you guys are gona love this car.I still remember when this car first came out in 1989 I fell in love with it but it was out of my reach,at that time a had a 1987 corvette .One day a had a chance to line up with one of them on Francis Lewis blvd in New York and he blew my doors off,since that day I allways wanted one.Finally got one about 1 1/2 years ago :WOOT:
 
Awesome! The motor looks great! If I had to do over, I would have kept my engine bay as stock-ish looking as could be. But I was chrome happy, but that's just my opinion.

I was fortunate to be the son of a car dealer back in the 80's and got mine when I was 17 in the summer of 90. I also mowed a shit ton of lawns and washed about a 1000+ cars. I'm sure your son can handle it with care too even at a young age, though I did drag race everybody in a 100 mile radius, on backroads of course. Just a few street races in the city...just a few DontKnow:

The wheels aren't stock, but you should be able to find those from year one or http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com/ The Turbo emblem on the side may be positioned wrong, but it may be the photo... you could compare to others.

That's a sweet car for a kid, I know from experience. He'll probably smoke all of his friends easily, even if they have a new ZL-1 or SC Cobra. Did you see the new HotRod mag review? Jeez, those cars are barely running low 8's in the 1/8 mile. My TTA did it at 8.20's @ 88 mph back in 1991 with nothing more than a gutted cat and race gas and a few spare O2 sensors. Just get a scanmaster, wet boost gauge, a Turbo Tweak Chip and and some sticky dot tires Mickey Thompson or Nittos.

Good to see a father son connection, they are rare these days. The car looks fantastic! Get it back in the garage!!!
