Favorite TTA Memories

Let's try this in a new thread, I know you all have passion for the TTA like I do and have plenty of great memories and photos to share.

I am trying to remember the details of when I bought my car. I am pretty sure it was in the March of 1989, from Peter Levin Pontiac in Chicago Heights, IL. It had to be in March because me and my 3 buddies drove from Chicago to Daytona for spring break for our senior year of HS. My buddy's dad just bought a new White Toyota Celica a couple months before I bought my TTA. We got pulled over on I-65 just south of Indy because people were calling us in for driving crazy fast and weaving in and out of traffic. That was only 3.5 hours into the trip and we both had cases of beer in the hatches of the cars, but they let us off with a warning.

Being the idiot 18 year olds we were, my one buddy tried to throw me a tootsie pop as we were side by side going at least 65, I missed it and it hit my drivers door, leaving a nice big ding in the door and sounding like a huge rock hit us.

My buddy was driving through Georgia later that night and I awoke to the police lights behind us. He got a speeding ticket, I awoke and popped the hatch from in the car because I kept the registration/insurance in the rear locked compartment, then realized we had beer in there again. DAHHHH, he just wrote him a ticket and we drove away and pulled over to latch the hatch. Got lucky again.

Then driving the last two hours in FL in fog before sunrise to get there and blaring Bullet Boys/Smooth Up in Ya and Rob Base/It take's Two on the Daytona beach and main street.

I wonder if PHS can look up what number my old car was and if anyone has it here on the forum. I sold it in Somerville, Alabama for $11K before I got married and went to Boot camp for the Navy in May of 1991 with around 69K miles on it and knocking terrible after two blown turbo's, thank God for the warranty . Maybe the owner is on the forum????

I also remember getting the black collector box in the mail after buying the car and taking the car back in to get the Turbo emblems installed. I didn't put the decals on the doors right away, and then replaced them about a year after I did because they were peeling a bit. I know I had the box for a while because that is where I kept the decals, but I used the key chain right away, as well as the audio tape. I had the tape in my old cassette case that I used to keep in the car and had it until a few years ago when we cleaned the basement and threw it away because who listens to cassettes anymore. I have no idea what happened to the collector box, I probably threw it away after it was empty. Again, dumb 18 year old.

Below are a few pics of the car that I scanned from back in 1989 at Wampum Lake in Thornton, IL. I used to drag race all the mustang 5.0's and whoop them on the frontage road next to I-394 in Thornton too. Nobody knew what the car was back then. Notice in the pic the Turbo emblems and decals are not even on it yet.

There are a few more pics of me and my wife to be in Alabama in 1990/1991 too. The only mods I did back then were straight pipes with Ferrari Monza Tips, they sounded so cool, a performance chip, and the sweet black bra, I can remember having to slow down on the highway because the flip up light flaps would start flapping in the wind. My mother in law remembers the black bra and asked me if I was going to put one on #613 when I got it last spring. You can see in one of the pics below the flip light flaps are gone, I probably lost them too in the wind or took them off, they were only held on by velcro.

The fastest I went in the car was on I80/94 going eastbound at 140 on the gauge and then backing off because I was even a little scared back then, plus I didn't think it would go much faster then the speedometer, what did I know.

But by far my favorite driving memory was boosting around these two lady Harley riders while heading back to my buddies house in South Holland, IL. His street was on the right and coming up quick, so I had went to pass them on the left and they sped up and didn't like it. I floored it past them and whooped back over and made a hard turn right onto the street. The back end slid out and I was still giving it gas and the gatorbacks just grinded into the pavement and straitened out right down the street, probably doing 60 or more. I loved that sound of the tires grinding in the ground. The tires on the two TTA's now don't grind into the pavement like my original TTA. Again, stupid 18 year old, but I would of loved to see that on video. And again lucky I didn't kill those ladies or run the car right into someones house on the street.

My new with these cars are going to summer cruise nights and car shows with my 9 year old daughter. She has even helped me work on the car in those hard to get spots or with her smaller hands. She loves it, and I know it won't last long, so loving every minute of it. My wife and went to Third Gen Fest in Crete, IL last year over the Memorial Day weekend and plan to go each year. It is about 45 minutes from our house and we both drove a TTA. I highly recommend this event, all the people there share our passion for Third gens, TA's, GTA's, Forumla's, Camero's, Iroc's, and Z28's.

That is my passion, MY TTA, ALL TRUE, and I hope you could feel it and I can't wait to hear your stories and Pics too.

This was my buddie's Dad's car, a 1987 Buick GN which fueled my passion for the TTA or else I would have bought a Vette, the rest is History.

Hope you enjoyed a walk down memory lane, this car is a real Time Machine for me, and still making new memories... I LOVE IT!! :toot:

I'm really glad you made this a new thread!
I just bought mine a couple of years ago, so I don't have too many significant memories yet.

I was into GN's just like most of us on the board. In Feb. of 88 I put a deposit down on a GN, but was unable to afford insurance. The 89 TTA is the first and only car that I've ever sat in at Detroits North American Auto Show with the intention to buy. I had heard about the TTA prior to the show so I knew I had to see it. When they began to arrive at the local dealerships in the Detroit area, none that I know of would allow a test drive. It seems most cars arrived at the dealers as sold cars. Fast forward to 09 and I finally decided to buy one. I looked at 5 cars, traveling a couple hundred miles to look at a couple real low-mileage examples. I ended up buying my car about 4 miles from my house and the 1st car that I looked at. I bought the car from the son of the original owner with the owner's kit and all the original paperwork intact. It was a 28,000-mile car that his dad had just added some bolt-ons to. It's been a great car and I'm planning to replace the original rubber this summer. Here are a couple of pics. The ones with my Bee are significant because my oldest daughter drove the TTA to the photo shoot and she genuinely had a blast!

Having owned a lot of 60/70s hiperformance cars I have to say the TTA was the most fun!! Wife bought one new. Nobody knew what the car was! Bought it on a wed.. Raced it the following Saturday with 300 miles on it. Just wanted to see how her new car would go. (We already had a fleet of Buicks). Car ran mid 12s @ 104 or 105.. It turned into a drag car 3 times a week for YEARS !! What a blast. Had it down in the 11s in no time with the stock junk. Was a terror on the street especially when they saw a woman driving it. Damm that was a LONG time ago!!

great thread.. Great story Kman.. Enjoyed raading it and seeing you and your wife and daughter 'grow' up with the car.

My memories are of getting my doors blown off by one back in 90 when I had my 13 second DSM on the Roosevelt Blvd:) And another memory of a local street racer who had a TTA new and watching that car blow away just about everything he came up against. Also I remember another guy who had one new and got it to run high 10's back in 89 or so at Atco. Amazing cars

not much to talk about when i first bought #308 ( needed work ) but # 818 is a whole diffrent story! gotta love a car that will light the tires up at 55 mph and only 10 lbs of boost ! ( no alky YET ) 3 kills so far, 2 mustangs and a vette. i have to say this is the best money i ever spent on a car, the fun factor is off the scale! ttarider

Those are some great vintage pictures K-man. Thanks for sharing them. Love the bra on the TTA-those were way cool back them.

I dont have a lot of memories yet with my car, as I have only owned it for less than 2 years, but it provides me with a lot of enjoyment and fun. I would say my love for turbo cars started in the mid 80's when a friend bought a GN. I had a chance to buy it several years later but couldnt.

I was probably destined to love cars before I was born. My dad had his own mechanic shop and was a pit crew guy for a front engine dragster team in the 60-70's called the "Blue Angels". They used to run at Dragway 42 in Salem, Ohio and several other tracks. So I grew up around all that. I have owned some really great cars, wish I could have them all back. The picture is of a 79 Monte Carlo, my dad built the engine and his friend painted it. The other car is a 76 Camaro I had right out of high school. Also one picture of the dragster.

:jaw:Now you know where the passion come from. 818 sounds like a beast, just keep it straight.... 308 won't be far behind... I look forward to many more fun stories and making memories with the TTA in the future... ENJOY IT!

Thanks for sharing the memories and pics Kimmee. I can see where you got your passion from. I am trying to instill the same in my daughters. My hope for the two TTA's is to keep them forever and pass on one to each of my daughters to enjoy when I am gone. This way every time they look at, think of, and drive their TTA they are reminded of me and a little piece of me will live on with them.

I didn't have a TTA when I was in High school. But I did have my 82 Trans Am. It wasn't the fastest car around, with the Crossfire injection, but I love that car. I am glad I never got rid of it.
Kman - I plan to pass the car onto my kids also. My wife likes to tease me and says that my daughter is going to marry some dude and he is going to love the car.:mad2:

I wanted an F-Body since high school. My parents made every effort to keep that from happening. The first one I found after college happened to be the TTA. I would have purchased anything with a V8 though.

I have had my TTA going on 2 years now. Used to have a lot of muscle cars but never a TTA.

Here are some pictures before I got my TTA in Tennessee, showing some of the stable mates that my TTA had.

87 Grand National or Gnx clone, notice the GNX83 tag. They used to have Gnx 83 and bought it new but sold it later.

Another PAS vehicle, the white GMC Typhoon.

And notice the car with the cover half on it, that is a Lesabre Grand National and there was around 117 of them made.

I have many, many great memories in my TTA. I was fortunate that dad was a car dealer back in the 70's and 80's and he was also a big performance enthusiast. After I graduated from High School in the Summer of 1990, he said that he had a call from the Pontiac dealer auction in Indy. They had about 8 TTA's for sale 2 of which were hardtop cloth cars. Anyway, I picked mine because the others were missing at least 1 or more badges and I also being young thought the T-tops were cool. So dad did bid on 502 and won my car and he also won one of the fastest 350 TPI Irocs we ever had at the dealership. It was a dual cat car. So, when leaving Indy me and dad rolled up to a stop light together. We both new what was going to HAVE to happen. I hadn't had my butt in the seat for more than a few miles and was used to a 5 spd TPI GTA. Leaning into the brake and stalling it up was kinda unfamiliar. So the light turned green, dad jumped out a car length or so, but the the lil ol 6 got it's feet and she rolled passed that Iroc like it had a dump truck tied to it. When we got home we realized that one of the spark plug wires was completely off one of the cylinders. Yep, was missing 38.5 cubes and still roasted a new 350 Iroc. Oh boy, when I got that spark plug boot back on and learned to stall it up, it was hello street racing. Raced everyone in town. Hardly ever got beat in the tri-state area for several years.

That was awesome. What a great memory with your dad. You clearly got the right car. Do you remember how much your dad won the bid for the car and/or what the other TTA's went for back then?

Thanks again to everyone for sharing their unique memories with their TTA. I hope this thread continues to grow over time with many more memories

Yeah, thanks it was good times. I still feel like I'm 17 when I go for a ride.
Mine had about 1500 miles and went for $18,500. The others were a little under and others were just a bit higher as I remember. I think the Iroc was around $15,000.

Our time machines, that is what I call them. The sight, sounds, and smells even take me right back to when I was 18, just need the t-tps off and a little Skid Row on, and with the upgraded audio today, it really does rock.

Plus you got a great deal on the car too, and still have it today. I have tried to figure out what number and what ever happened to my original one, but it appears it may of been laid to rest many years ago. That one lived a hard life and died young. After I blew the 2nd turbo in a year in 1990, UNDER WARRANTY, a VP from Pontiac called me to inquire about the problems I was having with my TTA, if I raced it, and if I was satisfied with the purchase. I was still young and dumb and didn't complain at all. I never raced it, only took it to the track one time to see what it would run. All I told him was that is was the most fun car to drive when it was running right. When I sold it, it had a bad engine knock, which at the time, I didn't even know what that was. Needless to say, you live and learn, and now I appreciate the two I have.

In 1991 a buddy of mine that was going nuts buying up turbo cars offered me a 24,000-mile cloth interior t-top car for $11,500.

Cool stories, I love reading about people actually using these things and having a blast on the road :)

I've always loved Trans Am's, had a bunch of GTA's before I even knew that TTA's existed. I even had a few turbo Buicks first (an 86 GN, 87 Turbo-T, and 87 GN) but never could get over style or handling, or lack of as compared to the GTA in my opinion of course ;)

My best TTA memories have to be the purchases of my hardtops. In 2002 me and a buddy flew out to Reno to buy my cloth car, we picked it up from a nice guy late on a Friday night and left Reno for California before turning around to head back to NY. Unfortunately we got stuck on Sunday with a bad wheel bearing in of all places Brooklyn, Iowa lol It was Easter Sunday so we got a hotel and had to wait till Monday to get repaired, which the local shop did quickly and without ripping me off which was nice considering I was at their mercy. The rest of the trip was quiet and we made it back Tuesday morning.

My leather car came from Los Angeles and I flew out there to pick it up on late 2007, that trip was interesting getting to spend some time alone following a lot of rt66 on the way home, having the radiator spring a leak, and spending a night in Joplin. But the highlight of my trip was spending a day in Arizona with George, seeing his collection, and bs'n about Pontiacs all day :)

Taking my festival car on the 2009 power tour was also a great time, when the tours route is more convenient for me I plan to do it again but in my WS6.

Wow!
I got a mention. ;)
It was great to see you, your car, and chat for so long, Steve.
I've still got the photos showing our two cars together, in front of my garage. ;)
Kinda hoping you'd get another, and visit again. :)
You, and others here, are always welcomed.
Simo has been out quite a few times, with his 20th, and 25th. Got pictures with our cars together too. ;)
I wish I could find the stories I wrote about, back when this site was first started. Some long good stories, that started a huge tread on our cars, with racing on the street, and at the strip.
Back when I first joined up here.
I searched, and can't find them.
I wonder, Chris, you have it saved somewhere? ;)
I could try and post from memory, but at this old age, not sure it would be as good. ;)

This is great my kind of people! These cars are time machines, you get in it and your wrapped back to your teens. I remember I was 5 or 6, I always played with matchbox cars and collected them.

But when I first saw Smokey and The Bandit, the scene i'll never forget is when Burt jumped the bridge! I knew I needed an T/A! Remember I was 5 or 6, so i waited 10 years, soon as I turned 16, the search was on.

Bought my 87' Trans Am, and that one gives me all my memories, 305 carb, it was a dog, but man it looked HOT! Took it all apart, learned were every bolt was, that car taught me more than anybody else about cars. I remember racing a GN once he killed me, then I had a 355 built, ford 9", gutted the interior, I ate everything in Hollywood, FL, back then, but to many tickets gas and insurance, I sold it.

Next I bought a 70 1/2 FireBird, no memories never drove it, never had a chance to restore it.

Then I bought my 89' GTA white, grey leather, and t-tops. My trophy winner, but always lost to TTA's, lol always got 2nd, or 3th place at shows. Had a few races, even with my brothers 95' Impala, with bolt ons, and street tires my best time was 14 flat in the 1/4.

Now I finally got a TTA #77, and restoring it right! It will be high 11, low 12 second car, and daily driver. I waited 9 1/2 years to get a T/A, and over a year to find a TTA, now it's a matter a months, before it's driveable.

Thanks for reading and all who helped me with all my questions!
