Engine swap question...

I am a new owner of a 1980 TA which has a 301 in it now. Will a 455 swap be fairly simple or will it call for new engine mounts...tranny change...or even a rear end change? I've only worked on older Fords so any info for Pontiacs would be appreciated. Thanks.

I know a 455 will fit in there, what trans to you have T350? You will have to change engine mounts, but other items you might incounter along thee way I'm not too sure on. For second generation birds, theirs alot of info on Trans am Country.com & Hitmans.com they might be able to steer you better in the right direction. Is the 301 you have now a turbo? Those are pretty nice cars.

If it were me, I'd keep the 4.9 turbo in there. Yes its slow but, if the car is in good condition, it will command more $$$$. A lot of people did what you want to do with the 80-81 turbo cars and now a good condition car with the original 301 is hard to find and worth some money. I guess it depends on what you want the car for? All out race or street bruiser:aggressive: or a cruising and show car?:beach:

Welcome!
You don't say if you have the regular 301, or the Turbo model.
Either way, the 455 should drop in with no problems.
I believe the mounts are the same, but not 100% sure.
As already stated, the car will always be worth more stock, and with the stock numbers matching engine.
But, nothing wrong with just keeping the original motor off to the side. ;)
The tranny won't last, if you have a lead foot, and the rear end should, as it's pretty much the same rear as the cars that came with the 455.
A great place to read and talk about the 301 engine, is:

If you get a chance, post a few photos of your car in the 301 section on this site.

Hope this helps,

That is true, nothing wrong with keeping it stock and maybe earning more cash if th time comes....but as well nothing wrong with keeping the 301 on the side. As far as the tranny, I can only assume that it's a 350. I actually came across this TA at an auction on the military installation that I live nearby. I haven't really dug into it too much yet, but the body is straight and the interior is decent although I do plan on upgrading it to "Bandit" style eventually. My first concerns is the motor right now though....it turns over, but I'm pretty sure that the timing is off so it's not actually firing up right now. So, either I rebuild or buy another...all still in question.

WOW! She is a beauty!!!! Someday I'll have mine that way...but I think I'll shoot for the leather or "pleather" interior instead of cloth! I'll have to keep track of it to see what it goes for...

OMG!
That's what my car looked like back in the day!
Beautiful!
Wonder what the final price will be, or what the reserve is?
