Drive Belt

Hey Guys,
I'm noticing my drive belt is looking pretty cracked!
Does anyone have a replacement part # or manufacturer for a new one?
Is replacing the belt something I can do in the garage or is it best to take it to a garage? My Clymer Trans Am book is kind of vague when it comes to TTA's, is the Buick edition something I should have?

You can do it in the garage but you will need a second set of hands to slip the belt over the altnerator. I use the Napa belt number 060623. The dimensions are 21mm by 1595mm.

Lifting weights has nothing to do with it. Holding the tensioner and slipping the tight belt over can be tricky. Everything is easier with help. Sure you can do it yourself but the easier the better for me.
 
Naples, Florida-Not the best place for skilled mechanics!
Even the dealerships! I asked the mechanic at the Pontiac dealer to check my air filter- he could even figure out how to get to it! This model is foreign to most of these guys! Most of the mechanics around here are working on Lincoln's, Cadillacs, Mercedes, BMW-high end new cars. I suppose none of you guys wants to come to Naples for awhile? I'm learning slowly how to do stuff on my car, although sometimes I wish I had left it bone stock-but you live and you learn! This car is much different from any car I have ever owned and learning how to tune it is tricky to me! This board has helped me so much and I know I can count on all of you for the right information.
I have so many questions-where to start!

Thats right. My grandparents own a condo down in Naples. I usually visit them over springbreak but I don't think I will be this year.

yeah it's pretty simple if you have basic mechanical knowledge (can take something apart and remember how you did it to put it back together) you should have no problems. Looks like Julio isn't too far from Naples, you might try contacting him and he might change it out for you for a small fee. You can contact him at www.alkycontrol.com
 
Dumbest question ever... My 91 Camaro had a slide bar on the alternator, you would loosen the nut and push the alternator back. The TTA seems different. How do I loosen the belt to remove it? Is there a tensioner and where is it. I wish I was not the one asking this question, but I guess it beats looseing a bunch bolts needlessly.

there's a tensioner between the alternator and the water pump, it's just a spring tensioner so you just put a wrench on it and pull it back and pop the belt off.
 
I ordered NAPA belt 060623 but it says dimensions are: 20mm x 1598mm not
21mm x 1595. The belt seems to tight, it is hitting the bracket on the alternator that goes down to bolt on to the intercooler when I installed it.
Have any ideas?

What do you mean hitting the bracket on the alternator? If it is tight it should not hit anything. I must be picturing something wrong.
 
I think the belt was to small, eventhough I got it on. I had to push tensioner all the way to the limit, so I think the belt system could not travel back to proper position.
There is that black bracket attached to the alternator that also goes down where the right side of the intercololer bolts up. The belt is touching it right between alternator and tensioner. I just think the belt is tensioned to tight so it wont let pulley system back to right position.

I know it must be hard to picture

Between the alternator and the first pulley(the top of that bracket I was mentioning is touching the belt. Hope that makes the picture easier!

Jim, not sure what to say. I see what you are talking about but all I can recommend is to go get another belt (the same exact one) and try it. I tried one from Napa and one from Oreillys (same Gates belt) and the Napa one fit better. I can't explain that one though. :crazy:
 
i just put on gates belt 60630 and it fit much better, it is clearing the bracket that 60632 was hitting. This one is 20mm x 1616mm.
I thought I was going crazy for a minute.

By the way the gut I deal with at Carquest was alwways telling me he had a Red 1989 gta, today he said he found out that it was a TTA someone had painted red and put a small block chevy in-I almost threw up. He says he has all the emblems in the glove box but no owners box. Is that crazy or what!!!

Glad it fits your car.

Tell him you want to see the emblems. The guy at the parts counter told me he owned a twin turbo v8 GNX from the factory.

wow! that's messed up. Take some pics and get us the vin we'll figure out if it's a real one! :)
