Drag Racing for New Years

One of my college buddies lives in Davenport Iowa and was telling me about Hangoverfest held at Cordova dragway in Illinois just over a 30 min drive away. They actually plow the track and send everybody out bracket racing.

Since my Trans Am has been torn apart for the entire summer I have missed out on drag racing for all of 2008. I have definately been in F-body withdrawl so I bought myself a backup. A month ago I bought a 95 Z28 that I've bolted on some snow grips on and I'm using for a daily driver. I have a 4wd truck in the garage but the camaro is more fuel efficient (6 spd) and a lot more fun. Anyways, I think this hangoverfest sounds like a fun time to find out what the Camaro can do.

Weather permitting, I'm planning to throw the drag radials (from the TTA) in the back seat and just unbolt the snow grips when I get there. If you search yahoo just type hangoverfest and cordova and you'll see their past turnouts. Of course many are pickup trucks and FWD daily drivers but who cares, 20 second 1/4 mile times are fun if the race is close!

Anyone ever tried to hook with a drag radial at 30 degrees? Anyone else interested?

Well I didn't have anybody respond to this post. I don't know why I ever wasted a new years doing anything else. We had a great time!

I must admit race tracks are a little slippery at 32 degrees. A slight breeze but the track was dry. I ended up with mis-match wheels because I used the drag radials from my Trans Am on the rear but my other TTA rears wouldn't clear the front calipers on my camaro. The car looked ugly as hell but I hauled it down in an enclosed trailer so at least it was clean. My truck looked like a salt cube when I got there because the roads in the UP and Wisconsin just sucked for the trip.

I made 3 passes spinning the tires like they were on banana peels, first gear was useless. I turned 14.50's @ 100mph and horrible 2.50ish 60 ft times. Jarrad (my college friend from IA) recommended I try using second gear to start because 1st seemed useless anyways. I had some of what I thought was tire slipping but stayed in it and ran 13.96 @ 103. The next run I was starting to feel real comfortable so I agreed to take my wife as a passenger for a pass. I was heads up against Jarrad's 1964 1/2 Mustang and I did the second gear start again dumped the clutch and hit red line right away. I grabbed 3rd and hit red line again right away. Unfortunately the tires weren't spinning. I cooked the clutch. So my wife had an 18 second ride at 58 miles per hour.

According to the guy I bought the car from it was supposed to have a dual force centerforce clutch. Either a past owner lied or it was really worn already. I really didn't care because I'm really happy with my time. I told my wife on the way down that with these temps I'd go home a happy man if I came home with a 13.99 time slip. Having never run the car before my 13.96 was pretty damn close. The car should have turned a 14.80's in stock form with good traction. With bad traction I thought that was pretty good.
