South Bay TTA "Barn" Find
I finally got around to insulating my driver's door with some Eastwood sound damping material, and install the new armrest I purchased months ago. One of the issues I ran into and couldn't fix immediately, or eventually, is that the plastic trim piece at the top of the inner door handle crumbled like an old cookie.

Reassembling it is not an option, I don't even know where all my pieces went. Purchasing an old or used one is going to be difficult.

I want to make a new one, who wants to help? I'm willing to do the CAD design work if someone can help me with the dimensions of the original part. They could be made of new plastics or even aluminum, paint to match would be required unfortunately.

Aluminium would be ideal then paint to match.

I did a quick model of them and had some rapid prototyping parts made (plastic material) to see if that would be a good route to go.

However the shape of the original parts are pretty complex wiht double courved surfaces so would take some time to get the models right in any CAD software ... other option would be to reverse engineer them getting them scanned in a CMM or similar then wrap a surface ontop of the point cloud generated ... then tweak and smooth it out before doing the mirrored part and have the pair either machined or done otherwise ...

So can easily be done if someone wiht good experience in surface modeling can take the time to get them modeled as close as possible to the originals.

Yes, I know it's not going to be easy. :D But, I'm willing to do the modeling if I can get some help with procuring a sample (any color), or images, or dimensions. I have about 1/3rd of my original intact, which isn't much to go on.
 
You really need one as providing dimensions or a proper drawing of one would take a lot of time ... best option would be to scan one as that would save a lot of time.

So are you good at surface modeling, which package do you use? How much experience do you have modeling organic shapes?
 
To be honest, I'm an electrical engineer, so I typically do circuit boards. But I've never met a CAD program I couldn't master, and I thought I'd try my hand at this piece.

Maybe I'm missing the pieces of the trim that are complicated but I don't think I'll have a problem getting it modeled.
