Do Flowmasters lower the performance on our cars? ---

I bought my car with a 3" exhaust already on it ... but it has no cat.

The car is using a Flowmaster muffler and FACTORY tips.

I love the way it sounds , but wasnt sure if Flowmasters have a bad rap with these cars ... like they do with the SYTY community?

SYTYers prefer the Magnaflow straight thru design ... saying that the Flowmasters with the baffles add too much backpressure, especially with a cat.

I cant pass inspection without a cat , so I am going to use a universal 3" in/ 3" out Magnaflow cat.

I was debating replacing the Flowmaster for the Magnaflow if I can keep the stock tips ... BUT wont mess with it if it isnt necessarily costing me much horsepower or turbo spool.

Whats your take on the Flowmaster vs Magnaflow muffler?

THANKS :) ---

You answered your own question.lol

Denny @ Mufflex noted that Magnaflow makes the best straight thru muffler period.

Straight thru design is the best for our cars.

I guess I am worried about losing my factory tips with a muffler swap.

Should I just measure the Flowmaster that is currently installed ... and find a magnaflow the same size?

Do they make a single inlet ... dual outlet straight thru magnaflow muffler? The one on my Syclone is single in / out.

Thanks :) ---

This is why I like Mufflex...

Lots of pages to browse... Looks like you have to fab something up if decided to go with the straight thru design... if you are going to reuse the stock tips. Call Denny

http://www.magnaflowdepot.com/p/magnaflow-13288-universal-muffler

Maybe this will work but it's not straight thru...

http://www.spohn.net/shop/1982-1992-GM-F-Body/Exhaust/Cat-Back-Exhaust-Systems/ Call on that Muffler... Random Technology is the name if I am not mistaken.

There are other options like Borla, Spintech, Hooker, Magnaflow ... but the issue is where the intermediate pipe connects to the muffler. Most are different unless you go with a universal muffler of some sort like posted above for your stock intermediate pipe. Stock intermediate pipe will only fit a few with 3" IN/ Dual 2.5 OUT universal mufflers.

Hope this helps. Being creative is the ticket.

Robert, You can first upload the video and put it on youtube. Then copy the youtube link and paste it when you want to post it. That should work. I have did it on turbobuick forum and I think it will work here.

Went to my exhaust man (i've know for 16yrs) he said leave well enough alone, looks like a Borla muffler and 3" stainless steel exhaust

Not trying to hijack but I bought my TTA with a borla 3" system on it. I'm not sure what restrictor plate is in the right side tail pipe. I was going to unbolt it and have a look , but I'm thinking about putting an electric cut out back there. I'm wondering what she sounds like free flow there or at the cat cut out. Right now , it sounds like a burnt out muffler at idle. Not a big fan , that's why the electric cut out would be nice there for idling around.

my camaro has no plate on the right side BORLA ... it idles quiet an is loud with full throttle .... flowbastards arent made for turbo cars!

I had a flowmaster in mine years back for about a week. Threw it in the garbage! I cant remember what I put in. I think It was a Sonic turbo. I meed to get a catback for my car now. I'm undecided at this point. Anyone have something they like?

Hooker aero chambers sound good and come with tips that look similar to stock tta's but bigger!
