Changing the Oil. What tips/tools do you have/use

I changed the oil in the TTA over the weekend and damn that oil filter always breaks my nuts! I hand tighen it then usually do a half spin with the wrench to make sure it don't blow off/leak and it's still wet on the bottom everytime I go to change it again! :devil: There must be a better oil filter wrench out there then the one I'm using. Works great on the GN because there is plenty of room but damn this TTA oil change to hell! :boxing:

I must have had it 15 years and was always good for me! So what tool are you using to fight the filter off your TTA? Also do you take it off from the top or under the car? Post away! :lamo:
 
I have one that attatches just to the bottom of filter and you use a socket wrench that fits in bottom, you can use the exstension and then the wrench...easy as pie
 
hmm I was thinking about going that way but it did'nt look like it would fit in there! I have one I'll have to try next time
 
I use a standard strap wrench but without the swivel like yours. I use the NAPA filters as the AC ones hit the idler arm. You should put a thin film of oil the seal with your finger before instaling the filter, and only put 3/4 of a rev after contact of the seal. overtightening will cause a leak. also watch not to damage the oil pressure sending unit.

I take min out from the top.

I went 3/4 a turn this time to see what happens! I was thinking about trying a strap wrench as well. I'm coming at this sucker from all sides next time! Thank god I only change it once a year. It's always hard for me to change the oil on a car when it's still clear on the dipstick! :) But I do it once a year regardless to be safe. Keep the ideas and posts coming!
 
Never had any leakage and I only hand tighten it from the top. Oil the o-ring first. Just takes a good 2 handed grip from the top to get it off, I maybe used the fitted cap with an extension and a socket a few times in 18 years.
 
I always do that to, take fresh oil and go around the gasket with my finger before installing, never tighten it too tight either.
 
Yea I've always done the fresh oil around the o ring. I keep a open quart of Mobil One laying around for just that. I also pour a little oil in the filter before I put it on. Then I'll leave the ECM wire off and crank the car for 10 second intervals till I see some pressure come up on the gage.
 
3/4 of a turn works great for me on all the vehicles with no leak. I can usually hand tighten it 3/4 of a turn as well.
 
Had to go in the garage and check to see which filter wrench I used to use. Funny that I still have it but how often to you get rid of tools? DontKnow: I used the same strap-style wrench that Philly posted the picture of. I use to run the Napa filters which gives some more clearance and take the filter out from the top. I would be really careful not to drip but would usually use a plastic bag to make sure there weren't any slip ups as I slowly guided it back up.
 
I run the 1086 filter and use the end cap wrench these guys are talking about. No leaks.
 
Napa 1086 and the same filter wrench as you use Jim, never an issue doing it from above just have to m=push the coolant (radiator) hose to the side a bit to slide it out .... oil will drip but like the idea of a plastic bag around it never thought about that one.

I hand tight mine, with oil in the filter and oil on the o-ring, snug and that works fine.
 
Ron the plastic bag is the best idea yet! :) I'm sure everyone will be doing that now. Funny part is for some reason I have a box of sandwich baggies in the garage sitting right next to where I keep the new oil and never thought of it! :)
