Car insurance for a classic

I spoke to my car insurance and they do not write insurance as a classic unless it is more than 25 years old. They also said the KBB value for an 89 is about 3,000 - which is where they would consider it totalled. I am looking for a TTA with under 50,000 miles and in good shape which would put the value in the $15k - $17k range.

How are people here insuring their cars?

You must not be calculating the KBB value right. I just refinanced a bunch of stuff and I ran the KBB on my TTA to show the bank. With 23,000 miles it came to around $21,000 at retail. The NADA was also close to that in Excellent condition. Make sure you are clicking on the Anniversary edition.

As far as insurance, I've done nothing special. I figure if the bank goes along with the book values the insurance companies should go along with the book value or actual market value. I pay progressive $295 every 6 month as my only car (everything else I own is on dealer plates). It says right on my proof of insurance Firebird/special edition.

My ins co wanted an appraisal from a car appraiser. I got one and I had two cars done for 320 bucks. Alot of cash but will save me if I ever need to make a claim. Jarred.

Mine is insured with Hagerty Insurance. They insure classics. They gave me an agreed value of $20,000.00
All I had to do was send in photos and in two days I was approved.
Yearly cost is a little over $600.00
That includes 0 deductible, agreed value, towing, etc.

I neglected to mention in my first post that KBB.com showed the TTA, but said that there is not enough activity to set a price. The 3k number was what they had for a GTA. I will go back and try a different zip code to see if that makes a difference.

Thanks for your reply.

I use Grundy Worldwide. You set the agreed value, no appraisal needed. Unlimited mileage. There are some limitations, such as having to be garaged, good driving record, cannot be used for daily transportation, etc... but for me, these were not limiting. My premium for an agreed value of 22,500 is $332 a year. Coverage is $300,000 Bodily injury/property damage. Deductable is $0.

I have both my TTA and a '98 WS6 insured with them, and my total is $558/yr. Much better than the $900 per year I was paying on the '98 by itself through Country Companies.

If you can live with the limitations, and only use your car for pleasue cruising, it may be worth a look.
