Another parts source ??- serpentine belt

Where can we get a replacememt TTA serpentine belt?? or what is another alternate part #. GM P/N 12399983 recommended by GM and as posted on Russ Salerno's site was discontinued in '01 and is not available. Plus, my local GM parts supply doesn't show any other replacement #, which means if the belt breaks, we don't drive. Anybody know anything??

John Pearcy suggested that I try Gates P/N K060875. He said it is about 5mm shorter than 12399983, but he heard they work.

I plan to pick one of these up today and I'll check it out.

I went to Bumper to Bumper Auto Parts (who use Gates as their supplier)the other day and the closest they had was a 1595 mm or 62 and 7/8 inch. I figured this would work as it was a lot closer than the 63.5 inch. I was worried that it may but stress on allof the pulleys as it is a little smaller than the desireable length. Keep us posted if you have good luck with it or not.

1987 GN,

I checked out the Gates P/N K060875, and it turns out that it isn't even close. It is 2240 mm long. According to John Pearcy, the GM 12399983 belt recommended by Russ Salerno is 1605 mm (63.189"). Russ's website lists this belt as 16 mm shorter than the original. It seems to me that the 1595 mm (62.795)that you mention should work fine as long as you can install it. The torsion spring in the tensioner pully shouldn't really put too much more force on the other pulleys even with the 1595 mm belt. Do you know the Gates part number of that belt?

In the meantime, I will check with my local Gates supplier and see if they have anything listed as closer to 1600 or 1605.

What is the actual length of the original OEM TTA serpentine belt. I thought I read that it was 1603mm. If this is true then the Gates belt that is 1595mm (62&7/8 inches) should be pretty close, right. If the original belt was more than 1603mm then this may not work. Bumper to Bumper Auto Parts here in Mass sells the Gates belt. Anyone have any input on what the original OEM length is?

Ok so now to just put this to rest in my mind. The 1615mm fits pefectly, correct? So what is the part # and who is the supplier so I can go buy a couple of spares. Thanks in adavance!

Hey guys,

I just picked up the 1615 mm belt. It is a Goodyear "Gatorback" belt, officially licensed by NASCAR, part # 4060635. Also listed as 6PK1615. According to the guys at Hutchins Automotive supply where I got it, this belt is supposed to be a better performing belt as it is more flexible, thanks to additional grooves that run diagonally across the width. It is also supposed to be quieter.

So there you have it. They told me that these should be available for a long time, so there shouldn't really be a reason to run right out and buy one.......but I did anyway:)

Hi all!
Since the article from High Performance Pontiac quite a while ago (telling people to go out and buy the NOS Spark Plug Wires as collectables), it seems that quite a few people bought up alot of NOS parts. Now, quite a few parts are hard to come by!
Radiator hoses, emblems, and now the serpentine belt are just a few!
I myself picked up a few (as spares), and I admit, I'm alittle afraid of selling them at the moment, only because I'm sure that if I do sell one, that I'll need it! I myself intend to keep my car forever (or I should say, as long as I live), so I intend to keep all my parts.
But the information for the aftermarket replacements that will work are a benefit to all of us! Thanks for sharing with all of us!

Thanks again,

George

Tom,
thanks for the tip! Nice to know that some aftermarket companies stock stuff for our cars!!

Later,

George

Hi again everyone,
Here's another bit of info for you. Prior to finding out about the Goodyear belt, I had e-mailed customer support at Gates and inquired about a gates P/N for a 1600-1605 mm belt. I got an e-mail today, and here is the response.........

Tom,

Thank you for your e-mail and for inquiring about Gates replacement products.

The replacement Micro-v belt for your 1989 Pontiac, V-6, 3.8L, 20th. Anniversary Trans Am is Gates part number K060630. The effective length, (inside circumference) of part number K060630 is 1601 MM. Your requirements were 1600-1605 MM.

This listing will be added to the Gates catalogue as this model was inadvertently omitted. Again, Thank you for bringing this to our attention and good luck.

Regards,

Bill Miller

Since this belt is just 4 mm (.16") shorter than the belt suggested on Russ Salerno's Turbo TA site, it should also be a perfect fit. SO.......we have two good sources for this part.

Goodyear P/N 4060635
or
Gates P/N K060630

Pass the word around

Tom
