A lighter starter?

I think I remember reading someplace on one of the Turbo Buick forums that theres a different starter out of something else that you can put in thats lighter in weight by a bit?

Anyone know more about this?

Yes sir. It is called a "mini starter." I have on I bought on ebay 2 years ago in a bag when I thought that was the problem with the GN. I think I paid $60 for it.

There aren't any on ebay right now but as soon as I see one pop up I will link it!

Yes... high torque mini starters are the way to go. Seem to resist heat failure too. I had that problem with starters on the TTA until I got a mini.

The mini starter they sell for a TTA (or Turbo Buick) is actually a starter from a late LT1 car, here are the applications that "should" fit:

BUICK ROADMASTER (1995 - 1996)
BUICK ROADMASTER ESTATE 1995
BUICK ROADMASTER LIMITED (1995 - 1996)
BUICK ROADMASTER LIMITED WAGON 1996
CADILLAC FLEETWOOD (1995 - 1996)
CADILLAC FLEETWOOD BROUGHAM (1995 - 1996)
CHEVROLET CAMARO Z28 (1995 - 1997)
CHEVROLET CAPRICE CLASSIC 1996
CHEVROLET IMPALA SS 1996
PONTIAC FIREBIRD FORMULA (1995 - 1997)
PONTIAC FIREBIRD TRANS AM (1995 - 1997)

I also own a 1996 Impala SS and thats the one I swapped into my cars years ago.

HTH,
Steve

I got mine years ago from turbobuicks.com and have not failed once ... and that must been 8 years ago ...

ahh thats what i was wanting to know I was wondering what original application it came from

how hard are these to install ive never done one on a v6 or v8 before, ive done a few on 4 bangers but they were really easy and up front in the engine bay

Whatever you end up getting make sure it comes with the correct bolts for your application ... stock bolts wont work.

Yeah 2 years ago. Wish he had some time machines huh? That's still a good price. I wonder what the quality is like???

Good point, but inflation hasn't hit that bad yet! Quality appears to be great but who knows..It did come with the correct bolts to make it a true bolt in.

I'll have my dad look back in his folder and see who the seller was. I couldn't find it.

I wonder how many people have used the one from G-body, and how that quality is?

Not a bad job at all. just make sure the motors cold and you don't drop the little nuts that hold the wires on.

Ebay seller "rareelectrical" sells brand new LT1 starters for $54.95 with the bolts... I have a couple and have never had a problem over several years...
