Fuel Pump change

How hard do you think it would be to change the pump in a garage with the car on jack stands by myself?

I did mine that way but I had the exhaust removed ... just make sure the car is as high up in the air as possible on jack stands ... be careful with the brake line from the body to the rear axle ...

No fuel in the fuel tank definitely helps or it will be very heavy and make it much harder.

Can I leave the jack stands under the axle, or does it have to drop down? Thanks.

Nope you need to drop the rear axle as far down as possible. So support the body under the rear frame rails (where the rear lower control arms bolt to the chassi).

You will need as much clearence as possible between the axle and the fuel tank as it needs to come down then swing and twist slightly to get the filler neck out and be careful not to bend it ... if it gets stuck try moving it back in place then route it out slightly differently and you will get it out.

I've done it twice on the 92 and once on the TTA.

I was making up swear words!!

Most filler neck cracking happens doing this so be carefull!

Is the in tank pump bad? If your wanting more fuel pressure/volume you could run a draw through set-up. I have mine set-up this way. Just added a bigger than needed external pump. Provides more fuel than I need and can be removed if you want to go back stock. Way easier than dropping the tank.

No it's not bad. it's an old Walboro. Not sure which model, but the previous owner put it in when he got the car, and i've had it for 5 years so it's over 10 years old. Plus Eric (Turbo Tweak) had to burn me a special chip, because I could not get enough fuel. I have 57 lbs Siemens injectors, and had to max them out to get enough fuel. Those injectors should be more than big enough for the power i'm making. Finally the fuel system doesn't hold pressure after I turn the car off. it instantly drops down to about 20 psi then slowly drops down from there. So i want to drop the tank anyway to check it all out... Sorry so long... Thanks

Definately be careful!! Make sure to chalk the front wheels. I did mine that way two weeks ago.
Make sure to remove the bolt that holds the brake hose to the axle before lowering the axle. Otherwise you'll be replacing the hose too.
I actually pulled the exhaust out as is from the cat back once the axle was lowered.
Be Careful!

I couldn't start on it today. I have to cut the exhaust, and put a flange in it, so i can get it out. I didn't want to do it today, because if i cut it I'll have no way to bring the exhaust to get it repaired. Any way i started on a new project. i took my spoiler off, and cleaned up the trunk lid. i've had a fireglass one waiting for about a year, but it doesn't look like it's going to fit. I have to wait till tomorrow to see how the manufacturer will fix the problem... i'll keep ya updated. Thanks...

Which one did you go with??? I hope you didn't try to save $50 instead of buying a Hawks!

No I definitely didn't get this one to save money. It's the same price as the Hawks one. I actually bought it in 08'. It's supposed to be an exact factory replica, but the way they made it it's not going to work. They're on the east coast, so they were already closed when I called. Guess i'll find out tomorrow. How different from stock looking is the Hawks Spoiler? Thanks. Dave

I can't tell a difference between the Hawks one and stock except it doesn't have the cracks.

Maybe Jared can chime in..I know he compared them.

I hope you haven't started cutting yet!! You can get the exhaust out without cutting...I just did it two weeks ago! The only thing I did was remove the exhaust behind the cat, unbolt the driverside hanger, drop, then tilt the muffler downward and bring it out the passenger wheelwell.

No. I didn't cut it yet, but my exhaust is one piece. It doesn't have any flanges on it except a band clamp by the elbow. I was going to cut it in front of the rear axle, so I can just take the back part off....Thanks Dave

Got rained out today. Was going to have a flange put in so I could unbolt my muffler. Looks like i'll have to wait till next week...

Got my flange welded in today. Gettin my tonsils out tomorrow, so i'll prob. have to wait till next week to start on the pump. I'll keep ya posted...

You dont have to cut the exhaust. Are you sure its 1 piece ALL the way up?Most have atleast a flange where the cat/test pipe is. But if you do have to cut it try to do it on the straigt piece. The tanks really not a bad job..I would hit the bolts/nuts with some PB blaster and let it sit for a day or so. You have to get the rear of the car pretty high up to finagle the tank out.

Yeah I had a flange put in right behind where the cat would be. Hopefully after I lower the axle I can get the exhaust out of there. I wanted a 3 bolt flange, and they put in a 2 bolt flange. Have any of you guys ever had probs. with a two bolt flange leaking or coming loose? Thanks. Dave

O.k. Started gettin the car up on ramps and jack stands at about 3:15, and had the fuel pump out before 6. Didn't really run in to any problems. It actually was much easier than I thought. Plus i'm doing it in a small one car garage. I'll see how it all goes back together tomorrow. I pretty much had the tank bone dry, so I'm sure that helped...

just finished getting everything back together. Wasn't bad at all. Just time consuming. The only thing I had a hard time with was getting the straps tightened all of the way. The front lip of the tank was catching right where the straps bolt up. Once I saw that it was an easy fix... I did notice though that my rear shocks are shot. No pressure, but they still have oil in them...
