What Meth to use in Alky Kit

For those that use AlkyControl, what meth/alcohol do you use in your system?

Can you use the blue wiper fluid? I ask this cause it has the same ingredients as the clear methanol that you find at race shops but for much less cost. The guy at Autozone who has had many turbo buicks in the past recommended using the basic blue window washer fluid to re-fill the meth.
 
It is about 40% methanol and the rest is water and blue dye. The blue dye is a powder added when it is made.

100% methanol, such as M1 and you can get it at a track or at a speed shop.

It is usually sold in 5 gal. containers at a speed shop or 55 gal. drum. $42 for 5 gal. around here.

Most of the methanol originates in South America.

Run as far from this guy as you can....he'll surely will NOT be around when you are pumping anti-freeze through your muffler.

You can use yellow bottle of HEET if you are in a pinch. Just find a sprint car racetrack around your area. $4.50/gallon here...Bring a 5 gallon container.

DONT use windshield washer fluid. Tell that guy at Autozone to throw in a set of felpro pt9441 head gaskets with his recommendation.

I would and have used denatured alky found in stores like lowes an home depot but its high.
When I took my heads off the looked good.besides the blown headgasket an i ran 10 gallons throught it of real meth. do not let meth touch ure bare skin in will git in your pours an make u sick

Thanks guys, I knew I would get the best advice here and actually on the Turbo Buick Forum from Julio himself. I tried to find out what to kind to add from Julio's website and I couldn't find it, I knew I needed M1 but wasn't sure if it had to be diluted with water. Now I have a better understanding too, which is what I was looking for. It was $38 for a 5 gallon container here at Winner's Circle in Joliet, IL. Filled the tank up and now this car is running better than it ever has. AWESOME!!! Considering we are willing to pay for bottled water these days, a couple bucks more for a gallon of M1 is sure worth it in the big picture of preserving the engine. Here is what Julio had to say about what to use in his alcohol kit and why.....

Yes you can use the fluid. The pumps used in most injection kits wont care. Now.. Your motor wont like it. Washer fluid is a "mix" of water, alcohol, and dye. The lower its temperature rating the higher its concentration of methanol.

Methanol=alcohol. Not water or dye.

The chips when made for alcohol injection anticipate straight alcohol not a mix of alcohol and ??

Water leans out. Alcohol richens. Depending on concentration will vary this amount.. if you like tuning and constantly messing with the syste,, you can use washer fluid. Just be forwarned its a bumpier road to get things sorted out.

Some pumps are not compatible with pure methanol, it's highly corrosive, those pumps do require a water/alcohol mix. Julio's pumps are designed for pure methanol.
Water adds some complexities because water does not vaporize very quickly. Water does not compress, so spraying water into the cylinder changes the compression ratio slightly in effect. There has been some factory cars that had water injection that was an attempt to utilize the physics of water and displacement and cooling..didn't work very well.
 
Anyone have any tip's for storing methanol ? seem's all i can find local is a 55gal drum which is most likely more than i would in a yr.

Local speed shop has it in 5 gal here, or you could go to the track with your own container and get what you want, I would use a 5 gal gas container.
 
Just keep it in the drum Rob and start driving like you stole the car and it won't last long. More fun that way :) :) ttarider

I always keep 55 gal drums and s gal drums of any race gas or meth on a peice of wood where it doesnt sit directly on concrete ... my theory is it might help it not condinsate as much water
 
I store it in 2 plastic 5 gal Kerosene jugs (I just like the yellow color). I only open it to refill a 1 gallon jug that goes to the track or fills my tank.

I too keep it off the concrete and mostly because Methanol is hygroscopic, meaning it will absorb water from the atmosphere,but not much.

I bet it would take years to ruin 3-5 gallons in a plastic jug the way I store it.

I use about 5-7 gallons a race season including street driving....and occcasionally I share it with my GN buddies.

And you only use 5-7 gal a yr ? I would have to drive it like i stole it , sold it and stole it again, lol. what the hell it's only $165 for 55gal, the way this economy is going it may be worth it's weight in gold next week and i hear you can make bio-diesel with it....:D
 
I just keep mine in the garage now that I have a 5 gallon drum. I keep learning more and more about this stuff, I just learned that you have to keep the alky tank at least half full and test/prime the pump twice when you start the car to help keep air out of the lines. Now that I have done that and fixed the exhaust leaks, the car is an absolute beast, like it should be. FUN!!!!!!!
 
I go through about 5 gallons in a year, and that was racing once a month 9 months out of the year, not a whole lot of street duty, maybe about the same, 2 or 3 times on it a month on the street.
 
This would be a good sticky. As someone who is brand new to turbo cars, this thread is full of good info and discussion.
