tranny fluid flush

Hey guys,

The tranny fluid in my car is lookin pretty ugly and dirty these days. My car is all stock and has 50k miles on it now. Should I change flush the tranny fluid and how do I do it? Is there a filter that needs changing too like oil?? Is this something I can do myself at home like an oil change or what??

Any advice is appreciated

Yes you can do this yourself. I little more involved then an oil change and a bit messy but basically the same.
You need to get a Transmission Filter Kit for the 1989 TTA (ACDELCO Part # 8639951 FILTER,TRANS FLUID w/4-SPD A/TRANS(MW9) or 20TH ANNIVERSARY PKG(Y82); W/SEAL AND GSKT) which includes the filter and a gasket.
You will need to loosen all the bolts off the transmission pan. Only take off half of them on one side so the oil drains to that side. Other wise if you take them all off at the same time the oil will just all over the place. Once it stops draining out remove all other bolts but hold the pan in place because there will be still oil in the pan otherwise oil will just all over the place. Remove old oil filter and old gasket (scrape all the gasket off).
Install new gasket/filter and replace pan and bolts. Refill transmission fliud.

Don't forget to remove the old O-ring from the neck of the filter. It usually stays behind when you take the old filter out. You usually have to fish it out. The new filter should have an O-ring already.

Another alternative is to have a complete flush and fill done by a qualified tech. I forget the name of the machine but it hooks up to the trans lines the run into your radiator. It pumps out ALL the old fluid then pumps in all fresh fluid. With a traditional "drop the pan method" you don't get all the fluid. Just be sure to tell them to change the filter as well if you go this route.
