Those who need front seats.

WS6

Stay thirsty my friends
That just about means everyone with leather interior. As you know about the only option for quality front leather covers is JAX,problem is $895 is big pill to swallow. And if you need rears too then it's another $895.
Well, I've been on the phone with Hawk's the last couple weeks getting an upholstery set and carpet for my '92 with the same Ultima seats as the TTA. I was lamenting on the limited options we have for replacing just the fronts in leather and she agreed. Then she called to tell me that she is negotiating with a new vendor for interiors and that they could do the Ultima seats for the TTAs in the correct beechwood leather. She tells me that this is an extremely high caliber vendor and that they could guarantee fit, finish and color. This would include a leather sample sent out to verify correct color before they are built and a turn around time of maybe 4-6 weeks.
The estimated( that means estimated) would be around $825 for all 4 seats. AND she also thought we could just order front covers for probably a couple hundred less than the full set price.

So my questions is; Who would be up for a full set at about $825 or who is up for just the front pair for around $650. Now, of course we are just "spit ballin'" right now and they have yet to sign on with these folks, but she said Hawk's is up for another group purchase since the spoiler purchase went over really well.

Here's another thought...since stripping my 92's front seats of all they're plastics it occurred to me that there is no difference right to left in just the covers. So, I'm thinking we could pair off for splitting the front seat price. Seems allot (like mine) just have driver's seat bolster problems.

so weigh in....

....

I know I'm probably the only person who is going to ask this, but all I need is the back to the back seats. The owner before me left the car in the sun I believe or left his garage open all the time and didn't take care of the leather so the top of the backs is all dried out and discolored. The rest of my seats are in pretty good condition so I don't really need them yet.

I don't know if they would be willing to parse it down to the backs of the back seats, but if you can buy the fronts alone I'm sure you could buy the backs alone. But you'd have two bottoms extra.

But, I'll ask next time I speak with Hawks

...

maybe I could just find someone who is looking to buy fronts somewhere somewhat close to me (or hey Jason you need new front seats), then we could make it cheaper for both of us.

gaaah, where was this post last month x.x i spent all weekend putting the car back together, spent $1800 on leather for seat covers x.x

Sorry dude...I wasn't looking really, but rather stumbled onto it in conversation with Hawk's.Our price will be good for awhile and they know that we have just come off the spoiler purchase as well. She said 6 months or whatever? we'll take care of you guys(meaning the TTA crowd).

Lance, thanks, I'll let you know how it's going.

I'm in the market for new seat covers as my driverside is worn. Is this still going on? Anyone receive and install? How do they look?

I'll second that! I have a '92 Trans Am convertible with the leather interior option and I also need new front (drivers mainly) seat and rear seat (top mainly due to sun exposure) - so I'm basically up for a set of seat covers but for a '92 convertible ... not a TTA (unless we all agree they are the same!).

I think I remember (many years ago now since I looked) JAX mentioning that the rear seats in the '91 & '92 Trans Am "fold down rear seat convertible" were different to the TTA rear seats - does anyone know if this is correct? (do the rear seats in a TTA fold down?).

I have a friend here in Australia with what must be the only TTA in Australia, and he thinks he can get me seat covers for my car but I think he's talking the TTA covers as well.

If worst comes to worst I can do a deal for front seats as my drivers side is your passengers side - so we both win! Here's a pic of how worn my front drivers seat is.

Okay, this is what I know about T/A seats in general.Which is what I learned over the winter re-doing my '92 T/A convertible seats and discussing things with Hawk's 3rd gen.

1. There is 2 different trim levels for the T/A, a "base" if you will and the upsell "ultima" seats.

2. I believe all 87-92 versions are the same on each level from year to year. The notchback and TTA's got the ultima seats with the rear seat headrest. The rest either had a split rear fold down or solid rear fold down. Convertible rears are the same width as the coupe version and from what I know all convertibles had a solid rear fold down back.

3. The Ultima seats have the power lumbar feature and the base seats do not. Both T/A seats are available cloth or leather. And Hawk's has a nice replacement for ultimas in Hampton vinyl in a variety of colors and shades and cloth as well. I chose that for the 92 because I'm a quite a bit cheaper with that car. For the TTA it would be leather only.

Since there's been renewed interest in Leather for the TTA's I guess I need to chat it up with Hawk's again. They were in the process of contracting a new upholstery provider at that time and had not gotten a "hard" pricing for the Beechwood TTA covers. But she did say they could do fronts alone or a full set. Jen said she would take care of us regardless of our time frame.

P.S. PMD92ta, you seats are ultima style and are NOT beechwood in color, so you need to get samples before you buy covers. They are closer to saddle or sandlewood.

...
...

Fortunately, through the years I didn't "plop" into the seat which many people habitually seem to do, this saved my seat. I've seen cases of portly folks to car seats seem to be like erosion is to sand, they just wash away. I do however need a wing. I may get into a wing group purchase down the road. Trans is still SOL.:explosion: so that's my focus currently.

Yes ... mine has the solid fold down rear seat. see attached pics.

I'd like to keep the 92TA Conv as original as possible, so I don't mind spending the $$$ ( ... compared to getting it to Australia, paying duty on it, getting it all cut up and converted to right hand drive - leather seat covers will be a walk in the park ... if ... if we can get them!)

that's really good to know - Jen is a smart business women.

I'll see what the original codes can tell me .... hang on ... OK my repro window sticker says it's got "articulating luxury bucket seats with ventura leather trim" and the decode of my option codes tells me that option code 64I "interior trim lt beige" and 642 "Trim combination, leather, lt beige". Would you interpret that to mean that the seats are "ventura" and the trim surrounding the seats is lt beige (but why are there 2 option codes for the trim?). I'll attach them so you can see for your self.

thanks

Geoff :-)

It sounds like our cars are "sister" cars! So what colour seats do we order? "Ventura" leather or "light beige" leather or "beige" leather??? WS6 ... is there some sort of chart to select from? (where did you get saddle and sandlewood from?).

thanks

Geoff :-)

Okay fellas, this is much simplier than it looks to be. All 3 of us have the same interior color with the exception of seat belt color. I see you have black belts and not Lt Beige.

Basically you have the Ultima seats of you have the power lumbar and you can tell that because of the accordian plastic trim panel on the side bolsters(front seats). If not, you have the "other" T/A seat sets. But I also see that you have the adjustable headrests with the turn knobs, which makes them the Ultimas too. So the factory may sell them under a different name but in all the service manuals I've seen they are called Ultima

As far as color goes you will call Hawk's tell them year and seat style ( they speak of them as lumbar seats) and what color trim you have. They have charts they use that show color and trim combinations for model and year used.
http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=227

BUT! this does not take into account years of UV damage and other wear. So, what I did was to request a Hampton vinyl sample in the range of beige that was available and she mailed me about a 4 different shades of beige. I settled on Sandlewood because I thought it matched my carpet best and I ended up re-dying my plastic trim and door panels to match the sandlewood(which is a shade or 2 lighter)
http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com/ProductImages/interior/doorpanels/fabricsamples/hamptonvinyl1.jpg

So basically, we all have Ultima seats, now just call Hawk's speak with Jeni or BJ on the phone (no e-mail, it's useless) and request color samples and order what looks best to you. Exact colors will be hard to find so keep an open mind about close being good enough.

Now, I did not speak with her about a group purchase with anything other than beechwood TTA seat covers. And I bought my 92's set straight up, no deal. They usually don't do GP's with anything less than 10 orders or maybe more, so gathering 10 or more 91-92 Lt beige seat set buyers will be tough.

Hope this helps.

....

Heard from Jeni at Hawk's today. They are still evaluating seat cover replacements that are OEM-quality for our cars. Apparently there are two vendors now competing for this business (read: better price for us!!). Stay tuned for more information in the next few weeks.

Hi WS6 ... I only have black belts because the damn Australian government won't allow any belts in a car that aren't "Australian Complianced". I mean how ridiculous ... like Americans are going to allow their people to "die easier" than Australians. My belts are from a Holden and have the compliance rating stitched into them so therefore I can register the car. Now that the car is registered I would love nothing more than to put the original seat belts back in ... anyone have a spare set??

Gatorlance ... good news about multiple vendors .. we just needa few more people needing these so as to make it worth their while!

Of course, OEM fit and cosmetics for our cars is a given. Once I have photos, I'll sent them out. I've asked Jeni for some bearing on price and availability.

Anyone interested in potentially jumping in on a GB for these seat covers? If we have enough (say 10) like last time, I'm sure we'll get a decent GB discount. As you all know, Hawks was great about working with us on the spoilers.

I'm still interested in only the rears, if someone is looking to get fronts I'm willing to split it close to 50/50 with you so it would be cheaper for both of us.

Jeni called today and our price for all 4, both rows, is $779 plus shipping. We will have the option to order just the front or rear row of seats.

Leather sample will go out to prospective buyers and we will have to agree to that color and style of leather before they are built. That means no returns for mismatch color.

I have some more info to share but I need to get my day going...

So, to follow up, I don't have the pricing for seperate rows yet. Meaning, cost for rears and costs for just fronts.
Now, Jeni talked about a 3rd option that I believe Lance brought in(correct me if I'm wrong) and that is Katzkin http://www.katzkin.com/main.html
She raved about the much higher quality of material that they use, but would be priced much higher.
Not that Acme isn't an extremely high quality, but rather Katzkin's reputation is unimpeachable in the leather world. And she' was just follow up a lead given to her.

Bottom line is this; We need 6 orders to get this $779 price for a both row set. Now I don't know if the 6 orders need to be for a complete set or if just fronts qualifies us for GP pricing. This GP is only good for turbotransam.com members. Colors would be Beechwood and if some folks from 3rdgen.org want in they need to join turbotransam to be part of our group purchase.

That being said, I think they are ready for this GP, so I hope the timing is not bad for those who wanted to replace thier upholstery, but I think this needs to be nailed down by the end of July or early August.

How I think this will work is when each party places an order they will be sent a sample Beechwood swatch to compare against thier car's interior and would sign off on it as being a match or reject that swatch. Then the build order would be placed and shipped out when finished.

Hawk's is currently on shutdown till July 14th so we can spit ball this around a bit, at least get a rough order number. So if you would, post what you need , albeit a whole set or just fronts or just rears.

:poke:
