Rear-end Fluid Change to Synthetic

Has anyone changed their rear-end fluid from standard gear oil to a synthetic? I've heard that Red Line Synthetic fluid can help gear longevity and add 5-10 hp due to less friction. How much fluid does the rear end need if you remove the rear cover to drain old oil? Do you just wipe out the old oil from the rear carrier with a rag or do you have to clean all of the old oil out with a solvent or other cleaner? Thanks for any thoughts.

I run the red line in my crank case and rear end. I will be putting it in my transmission later. According to red line their oil breaks down the slowest over time when even compared to Mobil One. So I can run it a little longer on a car that sits alot without worry of break down caused by the change of seasons.

On their web site they have a test of an LT1 powered 1996 Impala Police Car. On the rear wheel dyno they saw about a 4-5 hp increase by changing out the regular crank case oil for Mobil One. They then saw a total increase of about 9 hp when running Red Line in the crankcase, transmission and rear end.
