oil leaks

managed to get it out and run a few miles today, mainly to pace it against another vehicle with an accuarte speedometer(I'm reading 5-7 high).

Anyhoo...back into the shop I see where it has been dripping some oil where it was parked all week.So where do these typically leak from?

and it's not a basic main seal fix on these either. You have to unhook the passenger side motor mount to jack up the motor enough to drop the pan, or atleast when I thought mine was a problem I had to do that.
 
Almost every one leaks. When I first got 916, it leaked quite a bit. The more I drove it, the less it leaked. 3500 miles later, it's barely noticeable. Put a few miles on the car; I'll bet it improves. I've heard of people replacing the RMS and ending up with a worse leak.

I finally put it up in the air today and got under there to see where it is leaking. The rear main may be leaking ever so slightly but it's the oil filter/pump cover area that is doing the leaking that is noticeable. I see where the filter is banging on the idler arm too. Is this common?

I've also noticed that this starter looks new,BUT, it's excessively noisy during cranking. We used to call it "winging" but like on a traditional Pontiac block when a starter was winging we would install a shim or two. I see no reference in the supplement manual about shiming the starter to correct a starter drive from going too deep into the ring gear and causing that shrill noise.
So, do these blocks and starters use shims like Chevy and Pontiacs did?

Use wix oil filter number 51040.

And use 5 quarts of Rotella 10w-30 with a bottle of the STP oil treatment. Mine comes in a blue bottle but red is supposedly even better. Just change the oil pretty religiously...
 
I'll do that.

I used a bottle of GM's E.O.S. additive instead of STP in the Can am when I was breaking it in. Basically the same principal for oil supplements.


Any thoughts on the starter question?

Yeah EOS is just as good but I didn't feel like driving around to get it. And I think is it discontinued now.

No thoughts on the starter...I replaced the one on my dads GN but it came with new bolts and some shims...So I am not sure if those were for every car or this specific starter....
 
Poking around the turbobuick site it seems the OEM starters are noisy and do require shims,which is good news I suppose.

But the nut of my search revealed that a common fix is to upgrade with a Chevy LT1 or LT4 mini starter. So that's an option too.

What I installed was a ministarter. It was like $59 bucks plus $5 shipping. Don't buy one of the $200 ones.

I'll link ya tomorrow when I can go back through receipts.
 
Besides my rear main leaking, I am now getting abit of oil leaking from the front, above the oil filter, down the front of the block.
Any guesses?
I can't see anything with the turbo cover on the turbo, guess I'll have to take off the cover and look for it.

Nope,
I doubt that's it, as it's up further near the top of the block, way above the oil cooler/oil filter.

Time to pull that old engine of yours George :clap: Any year now I will have mine back in and zero oil leaks (I hope) :worthy:
