Lexan T-Tops

My car came with the Lexan tops. They aren't in too bad of shape, just a few cracks can be seen when sitting in the car and looking up. But I have removed them and replaced them with glass ones from another TA that I have (parts car). Are the Lexan ones worth anything?? I have them in the house stored away, so the temp is consistant. Wasnt there a recall on them?? If so, did you have to turn them in to GM in exchange for glass replacements?? I know one thing I liked about them, they were much lighter and easier for me to handle.!! Just curious, as I know most have the glass t-tops.

i have them also my local gm dealer says no but i believe your correct im press n on them . lets see what happens

Yep GM had a recall out for them, I most likely have it somewhere in my files, but not sure if (and actually never heard anyone say so) if GM asked for the old ones back when you got the glass tops.

Also check the shape of the Lexan ones, if you are a tall person you get more head room ... looks pretty cool (like the vipers but not so excagurated) from the back of a TTA with LExan tops :-)

For value, not sure but I guess either people want them due to the weight they can shed or if their stock Lexan top breaks/cracks and it's a nice lowmilage TTA replace like for like.

One of the TTA's on this side of the pond still got the Lexan tops and they still look good (35k miles or so on the car) ... but I know he got a pair of glass ones as well just in case.

They could be worth $150 - $250.

Glass in much better than lexan because of it's strength and was not prone to cracking... Hence the recall. I wasn't a big fan of the shape either. I upgraded to the glass... Well, I did not have a choice. The driver side t-top thought it could fly.

Hey, thanks for the good info. I figured GM would not let you keep the lexan ones if you brought the car in for recall. I did notice they had sort of a "bubble look" to them from the outside of the car. Well, I guess I will keep them in the house and hang on to them. The glass ones I had as spares look good, so that is not a problem. Was the TTA the only car with them or did they put them in all 89"s??

All F-body cars got them as far as I know (so Firebird and Camaro line) ... again have to look it up as the recall would mention that as well I'm sure.

Ok so had to take a look at what was sent out to the dealers ... and it was not a recall as such just a case by case replacement if customers complained about it :-)

And the lexan part of the top was replaced by glass so hardware had to be swapped over ....

In short if you had no problems with your Lexan tops and did not complain to your dealer you would not have gotten the glass version installed ... and all you would have been left with (or the dealer) would be the Lexan "glass" portion everything else were to be transfered to your new top.

Enjoy!

Thanks Jan for taking the time to look this up. I guess that makes sense to just swap the lexan out, so you can still lock the tops (didnt think of that earlier.) Again thanks, good info to know!!

My 92 Z28 still had the original Lexan tops. I was going to swap them out for some spare glass ones I had lying around before I sold it, just so I could have them for the TTA. Never did though, and now they are gone. Unfortunately a friend of mine had a brand new never used top( not sure what side) that he threw out a few years back since he only had one side. I will kick his ass for that next time I see him.

It would depend on the dealership,
As to having to sent the plastic one back.
If you hung out at the dealership alot, they would give the new part, and let you keep the old part.
They did that for me on a few issues. ;)
