So i'm driving the TTA yesterday and all of a sudden I hear this high pitch whine coming from my car, so I pull over and it's coming from under the rear of the car near the fuel tank.
I turn the car off and turn the key but did not start it and I can hear the noise, so I'm assuming it is the fuel pump. Does anyone konw if that sound is common when there is a problem with the fuel pump? The sound is constant when the car is running and by the time i got home it was louder. The crappy part about it is I had a Walbro installed about 2 years ago, it only has 6,000 miles on it. The mechanic who installed if i remember correctly said the whole rear suspension had to be dropped to get out the fuel tank out, does that sound about right? Just what I need!
 
I just let the car idle for ten minutes and it sounded fine, but yes when I turned the key last night it would make the sound for a few seconds and then stop.
 
thats what i normally hear when i turn the key, the walbro pressurizing the fuel line. i dont know why you would suddenly be able to hear it over the rest of the car while driving it, though.
 
I have an underhood fuel pressure gauge and it will slowly lose pressure when the car is shut off. Is that normal or should the system hold pressure? Sorry if this is a stupid question!
 
That noise was pretty loud, I've never heard it before. I only noticed it at a stop light when I wasnt moving. It almost sounded like the hatch motor was running but a higher pitch and constant near the fuel tank. I parked got out and while it was running I stood there for 5 minutes and it was constant, same thing when I got home.

There's a thread over at TB about recalled walbro pumps and how to know if your's is one of them.

But it sounds like your gonna become aquainted with F-body gas tank removal.

And it is common to normal to have the FP drop at the rail after shutdown. Sometimes it's a matter of minute or so.
 
i had 2 or 3 bad walbro pumps. i would be driving, and then the car would start to hesitate for a moment before accelerating when i would push on the gas. then it started to get worse. after a few minutes, i couldnt get much power out of it at all. then, it would die. i dont know if the pump had to sit for a while before it would start again, because i happened to have a bad starter at the time as well, (REALLY inconvenient having that compound the problem) but after 30-60 mins it would start up and be drivable for a while. once it really started acting up and i floored it. i watched the rpms drop slowly from 4000, to 3000, to 2000, to 1000, and then 0, in a smooth descent while i had it floored.

just some symptoms of a bad pump ive noted to look out for now that it seems to have started acting up.
 
Are Walbros' the main option or are there better fuel pumps out there? I dont want to go through this again for a long time for money's sake!
