I have a new knock problem now

I'm using the one I got a couple years back. Would it really make that much of a difference?

YES!!!! you put a new cam in from what I remember along with forged pistons. Do a compression check on all cylinders to make sure that you're close to stock and then send a list of EVERYTHING you have done to the car to TT.

If you could, list everything that is new or different since you bought the chip, including torque converter, fuel pump, injectors, intake, pistons, heads, bore, cam, lifters, etc.
 
Hmm, okay. Makes sense. I'm still trying to pass inspection, so if I still can't today, I will order an emissions chip along with the regular chip. I'll also get it compression tested while I'm there.
 
Okay...so how's your hot idle oil pressure? under 15?

you're going to worry about what torque converter hes running with the chip when he changed cams and kept the same chip (assuming from old posts since he hasn't posted all the changes)?

Yes, and not because of "what TC he's running with what chip" that I'm concerned about...the wrong chip idea has been "thrown in the mix" already.

He's right at the break-in mileage where a thrust bearing fails, and it's no secret about the Vigilante L/U being extremely noisey and, if coupled to a JW or other aftermarket flexplate there is not enough clearence from the pump. That causes many premature thrust failures.

So...if his oil pressure is low...he has a relatively new/different knock problem...associated with higher load...and a notorious Vigilante L/U?


He may be losing his thrust bearing...But a couple checks can be made to rule it out. One is he can check his crank end play buy pulling on the balance/hub and if moves a bit in and out...problem. And I would be cutting open an oil filter and looking for metal in the pleates of the filter.

DISCLAMER; I am by no means accusing the Vigilante of any wrong doing, I know allot of guys run them and love them. But allot of guys also run them and hate them becasue they can rattle and have been linked to lots of thrust failures.But that's proably because of poor prep work on the installed clearance.



So...I'm just throwing another idea out there....as stupid as it may be.

Hot oil pressure at idle is around 30.

I trust the guy who installed the Vigilante, he did it while rebuilding my transmission. He has a lot of experience rebuilding Grand National and TTAs, I doubt that he would have messed it up.

I have the oil and filter to do an oil change, which I was planning on doing anyway. I can check the filter while I'm at it.
 
I got my boost back up, and my alky injection working. Turns out we left the line off the map sensor :wall: So, that takes care of that. It pulls pretty hard at 18lbs boost. I get knock at 15lbs even with 101 octane unless I use the alcohol, though. I ordered a new chip, I'm waiting on that.
 
My updated TT chip came in today. I asked him to enable the fast updates for the Scanmaster, and he did. It's SO much nicer having it update 2 times a second.

This new chip has seemed to have solved my knock problem. I can run 10lbs on 93, no knock.

I have discovered a couple additional problems, though. For one, my alky system is acting a bit wonky. I can have the knob set a little past 1 running 15lbs boost and it will stumble the engine bad at WOT like it's drowning it with alcohol. Sometimes, though, it runs just fine. It doesn't seem like it should stumble it at all set so low, and if it did it should be consistent.

The engine itself doesn't seem to be running the way it should either. Today I turned the alky off and the boost back to 10lbs. Before shifting into second, the car briefly stopped pulling and the rpms dropped before picking back up, like a lull in power. I haven't been able to look into it yet.

I fixed the one boost leak, but I still may have another. It still seems to be building boost slower than it should.

One step at a time though, right?
