Gear Select Bezel Question

Sorry if this has been gone over before but as I check out NOS parts on Ebay I noticed that the Console plates come with at least 3 different kinds of shift-bezels ... one with square indicators next to the Letters (P, N, D, R etc), one with round indicators and those with no indicators.

ALL of the TTA's that I have pics for (over 40) including mine have the NO INDICATOR styles. Today on ebay a TTA with less than 20K miles has one with square indicators next to the letters.

What's up???

here is the link
Pontiac : Trans Am: eBay Motors (item 260669294180 end time Oct-16-10 13:01:15 PDT)

My tta 733 has that shifter bezel, I thighs it was one from a 1991 trans am or something cause my other three have the usual bezel. I really don't know for sure though.

Stock is no indicator. The car on eBay has the '91-'92 style shifter console plate. Essentially it's the same but besides the indicator you can notice slightly that the shifter boot is a little different.

I did the same modification to my car after seeing it in someone else's car.

And $35k! Good luck on that one!

I can't believe out of all the things one would change on a low mile TTA, someone would swap that out with the newer one! An untouched 18K mile TTA but the console plate was switched out? I don't get that one. While I will admit it sucks to not have a gear indicator there... I think on that car I would have left it stock and original. Some unknowing soul will buy that car have it at a local show and another TTA owner will point it out and the poor guy will get into a fight about it! I've seen that happen many times!

I remember when I first got my TTA and from having other console shift GM cars I just put it in gear and off I went. When I took my brother for a ride a few days later he said "how do you know what gear your in" I looked down and thought, well look at that no indicator WTF! At first I thought it was something they missed when building them or maybe it broke off or was back lite. I can't recall any other GM car with no indicator to tell you what gear your in!

A PO of this car(#791) had a bunch of stuff for sale on ebay not too long ago. Had orig 20th anniv plug wires and a few other things, I bought a service manual. Dont remember seeing a gear select bezel. On an interesting note, the dealership that sold this car new (Axelrod) is not too far from me, been past there a few times.

I have the plug wires and the original emblems for car #791, the wires are in excellent cond. and the emblems are ok.

where can u get sides to console ? mine is comeing apart and dont no what the fix would be , also i like the fact console i cant remember ever looking down to see what gear im in just feel your way with this car lol :bye1:

In "normal" driving most people wouldn't need to look down to see what gear they're in. But take the car to the track, drag strip or otherwise, and it's nice to look down for visual confirmation. I used to downshift my car (waits for everyone to stop scratching their heads asking "Why'd you do that?") when I would hot lap a road course. IMO, the indicator is just something that should've been there all along.

Adam if you mean the foam/rubbery outer stuff is separating from the plastic "frame" on the console this is fairly common happened after a few years on mine (NOS console) I installed back in 2004 ... anyway the fix is to use gorilla glue ... not too much as it will oz out and swallow however a thing evenly spread layer then clamp it down with a flat piece of board of some sort worked fine for me, Gorilla glue will not let go it works wonders on everything and is heat resistant etc as well.

Cigarete burns maybe ???? Only OEM replacement you can get (new that is) is the 91/92 shifter top bezel ... or it broke .... or he just liked that one better :-)

I bought my car new,
And a few months or so later, got a questionair in the mail from some company that got contacted by Pontiac, about my new purchase.
They wanted to know the good things and the bad things.
One of the bad things I complained about, was the lack of being able to see what gear you were in.
I guess I wasn't the only one to complain about it, as they changed it a few years later.
I like the new one with the indicators better.
I bought two of them NOS, but I haven't use it, and still up in the air if I will.
I even bought a couple of fourth gen Trans Am consoles to change over if I decide.
Haven't done that either.
I do like some small changes, but ones that can be changed back over within minutes. ;)

Jan ... are those Goodyear belts available (the one you sold online) to purchase? After the auction was done ... (forgot about it and didn't bid) I looked for it online and couldn't find one.
