Crossover Pipe

I had the rear main seal replaced a week ago(since then it is leaking again-have it bring it back in) but a couple of days later the car has a very bad sounding exhaust leak. Could it be something from removing the crossover pipe(are there any seals in there that need to be replaced or is it just slipped on and bolted down?)

It just slips in and you bolt it in, but it HAS to be tightened down correctly.

You cant just tighten one side then the other, you really need to work it side to side and get it snug, then go for the final tighten.


Hopefully the bulb ends are not damaged if the last person tightened it with a rachet and not a impact.

I would remove it, inspect it, and then use some copper coat paste to install it to seal up some small leaks. Copper coat or orange RTV

Hi,
The manifolds have conical flanges built into them,and the crossover should not be damaged by wrongly positioning it. I think sealer is a waste of time, as it will burn up pretty fast. I would,however, use lots of antiseize on the bolts.Even tightening is pretty important, and the pipe can be moved around quite a bit to get the right position. Sorry about your repeated leaks,rear main seal should be split lip;throw away the rope.Also, oil pans are a bugger to seal. Use Duttweiler's thick cork gasket with a lite coat of "the right stuff" on the block side, maybe that will last you a while.It's a lot easier to do while the motor is out. I was rebuilding my Regal motor,and took special car with the pan. I hope it holds up! My TTA never leaks a drop,so I leave it alone....

I put a bead of ultra copper on my crossover pipe on my GN when I had issues sealing it. With alky that thing see's some crazy temps and it holds up really well actually. I took the pipe off a year later and after the bolts were out I had to pull the crap out of it to make it come off it sealed so well. Most likely like these guys said they didn't tighten it good enough or it might not be seated correctly.
