Broke Down For A Few Days

Saturday let it warm up at idle and I noticed the voltage had dropped at the alternator, measured at alt. it was less than 12v. So took alt. off and had tested and it failed. I got one ordered it will be here in a few days. Alt. was less than 2 years old. Hope to be up and running by next weekend!:D

I along with many others have had the altternator electrical gremlin with the TTA.

It seems to be in most case the original grounding becomes faulty and zapps the alternator. I would recommend changing to heavy duty battery plug terminals and adding an additional grounding wire to the negative post to the grounding screw on the chassis close to it. Solved my issues after changing the alternator at least 10 times two years ago after upgrading the fuel pump and adding the hotwire kit.

I just went through an alternator problem too. I could jump the alternator and make it work, but I think the voltage regulator went out on the alternator.

So I sanded to metal all the ground points and added a extra fender ground from the battery. replaced the alternator and all has been good.

I am about to hook back up the hotwire kit and see if it works, since I upgraded the ground wires.

I'm surprised you didn't have five of them already...;) i am happy with the new one i bought from Kirban, there was nothing wrong with the old one, it just looked old..

Got a lotta other parts but no alternators, maybe I should stock up! By the way, I had a heck of a time finding someplace to test it. Went to NAPA, Autozone, Advance Discount Auto and finally Oriellys tested it for me. I spend all last Saturday dealing with that alternator! I am adding ground wire and still waiting on the alternator to come in, nobody even had it in stock around here.

If that is the original alt don't throw it away, have it rebuilt and keep it... both of mine are orig. and work fine still...

I got the Kirban alternator as well for mine when I rebuilt the engine, nothing wrong with my OEM one however with age and the new one looks much better (I also update to the later style fan blades on it) ... kept the OEM one to rebuild it a clean it up one of these days.
