Another Hot Start Problem

I just purchased a TTA and drove it 10 hrs home without any issues other than a Hot start problem. If I drive it for say 15 plus minutes, stop the car and start it back it, it wont start. It doesnt even crank. Dash lights will flash. When I turn the key 4-5 times, it will finally crank and start up. This happened about 5 different times. One time I tried to turn the car on at a gas station, and nothing happened. The funny thing was about 2 minutes before I got to the gas station, I started the car fine(4-5 cranks). The lights still flashed when I cranked it, but thats about it. I tried about 7-10 times with no luck. I even let the car sit for about 15 minutes and nothing. The gas attendent tried to wiggle the battery cable, and then tried to jump the car with no luck. After about 20-25 minutes, I cranked it and it started. I read that other people had this problem. It wasnt really clear on the other threads as to what the exact problem was. I really need to get this fixed. Does anyone know for sure what the problem is? Where should I start? If this helps my car is completely stock. Thanks in advance

Thanks...I read that thread already, and at the end the Guy that started the thread said his was NOT a VATS problem. Unless I am not understanding, but nobody says for sure how to test if it is VATS or the starter/solenoid.

Try jump starting the car next time to rule out low electrical current issues. Also a portable jump starter would a good for testing if you can find anyone to help out on the streets. If it does start right away, I say it needs more juice so low current is not enough to start the car. Good Luck!

The pellet is not that bad. I just bypassed the VATs system. Well see if this works. Is there any downside to bypassing the system? I just dont want to get stuck again as it is annoying and embarrassing. If it doesnt work, then it should be the starter right? thanks

Yea, try replacing the starter or coil. I remember putting a heat shield on my first TTA to keep the heat from the headers off the starter. Good Luck again.

What do most of you do with your VATs system? Do you guys bypass the system or try to fix it? What usually goes wrong with the system? Any downside to bypassing the system? It seems like my car starts funny since I bypassed it. Starts rougher, and it seems like it turns over one or two more times than before I had the VATs system in. Can this be or is it just in my head, and that I am paranoid?

I would repair. Get a new lock cylinder with keys. Should be around $30. You'll have to remove the steering wheel to get the cylinder out, but that's no big problem.

So far no issues after I disabled the VATS system. Is there any downside to bypassing the VATS system other than having no security? I am thinking of going through the whole system and just replacing every part like Starter, solenoid, wires, and poss the module. Is it worth it?

my problem was the starter. if you decide to replace your starter, go with one of the high torque mini starters. i cant remember exactly which starter i got, but they use em in corvettes and they stand up to heat really well.

I just disabled the relay in the driver side kick panel. No problems since. However I am going to enable it again this weekend, but I am going to replace everything in the way(starter, relay, etc.), to make sure there are absolutely no problems.

I just replaced the starter with a stock replacement starter from GM. The new starter sounds exactly the same as the old one. These starters sound different to me. They kind of have a thick/muddy sound when the car starts. Is this normal? My Grand National had a higher pitched/scratchy sound to it, like most of my other cars had. Also my mechanic was worried about the stock starter not having enough heat shielding. Is it going to be a problem? Some mentioned a corvette starter? Which one will work best?

thanks......HH
