3 Bolt Turbo Gasket

I'm about to re-mount my turbocharger. I bought a metal copper gasket. It's a stamped piece of metal and the hole/stamped O-ring that the exhaust passes through is recessed on one side and bumped out on the other. So, does the bumped out part mount on top of the exhaust manifold exit leaving the recessed side to mate against the turbocharger? Or is it the other way around?

I have used that gasket before and never paid attention to the embossed ring. Never had an issue, although I am sure there is a correct way. I'm sure someone will know!

I used the same copper gasket when I did mine; you can install it either way doesn't matter as it will compress and seal exactly the same.

Like Jan said it doesn't matter which way it goes BUT did it have one before? Once you use one you will always need it, didn't have it from Factory.

Another friend of mine said the same thing - no difference. I built this engine from scratch in 2010. When I took the original engine out (to preserve it), I believe that there was no gasket which I thought was odd. Now I know that it wasn't. I used one of these copper gaskets with the new engine (bought a few of them at the 2011 reunion in Ohio) but didn't take the time to question anybody about the direction of installation. I took the engine out to re-torque everything recently and am now reassembling. Any reason not to use copper RTV on both sides? That's my plan.

Yeah i put a thin coat on each side so when its clamped together it don't make a big mess.
